Airbus pursues autonomous air taxi research project
Airbus Group has provided a glimpse into its research on air taxis as a solution for growing surface-transport gridlock in the world’s largest cities. This includes prototyping an autonomous air vehicle for individual passenger and cargo transport and studies of a multi-passenger CityAirbus concept. The single-passenger vehicle is being developed by A3, Airbus’s Silicon Valley outpost, under a project named Vahana. This was launched in February and a team of internal and external developers has agreed on a vehicle design, and the prototype is scheduled to fly at the end of 2017, according to Airbus Group magazine Forum.

4K Invest completes takeover of Adria Airways
German-based restructuring specialist 4K Invest (AA International Aviation Holding) has completed the takeover of Slovenian flag carrier Adria Airways. “We can confirm that a resolution was adopted at the shareholders meeting held in July that all [remaining] shares of the company, which are not owned by the main shareholder AA International Holding [which holds a 99.14% share] shall be transferred to the main shareholder in return for payment,” a spokesperson confirmed.

Alaska Air posts record Q2 profit of $263M
Second-quarter profit for Alaska Air Group Inc. reached a record $263 million, a 14% increase over the same quarter last year. "The fundamentals of our business are strong. We are running a great airline and we believe the merger with Virgin America is going to create a very strong airline with reach across the entire country and with real strength in originating traffic up and down the West Coast," said Alaska Air Group CEO Brad Tilden.

South Korea’s Eastar joins U-FLY LCC alliance
South Korea-based low-cost carrier (LCC) Eastar Jet has become the fifth airline to join the first North Asian U-FLY Alliance of low-cost carriers. The group was formed in January 2016 by Hainan Airlines’ four subsidiaries Hong Kong Express Airlines, Kunming-based Lucky Air, Urumqi Airlines and Chongqing-based West Air. The new alliance is looking to extend regional coverage through the new Eastar connections as well as extend LCC services.

Garuda Indonesia sinks into red despite network growth
Garuda Indonesia reported a net loss of $63.2 million for the six months through June 30, reversed from a $29.3 million profit a year earlier. The earnings decline occurred as the airline continues its major international expansion effort. Group revenue was down 4.1%, despite the fact that passenger numbers were up 4.4% in the six-month period.

Hawaiian Airlines offers on-the-job experience to student mechanics
Hawaiian Airlines is working with Honolulu Community College to recruit and train aviation mechanics. The new Aircraft Mechanic Apprenticeship Program offers hands-on experience that will help students obtain certification from the Federal Aviation Administration.

India's IndiGo sees fare pressures; ongoing A320neo issues
India-based low cost carrier (LCC) IndiGo reported a net profit of INR5.92 billion ($87.3 million) for its 1Q 2017 period to end June 2016, down 7.4% compared to the same period last year. IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh said profitability was down “primarily because of competitive fare pressures.”

JetBlue moves to improve West Coast presence
New York-based JetBlue Airways is adding services from Long Beach, shoring up its West Coast expansion. It will add 4X-daily service to San Jose Jan. 4, 2017. Introductory fare is $39 one-way. JetBlue will also add three more daily flights on Long Beach-Las Vegas, one additional daily flight to -San Francisco and one additional daily flight to -Salt Lake City. These additional services, along with new service to San Jose, give JetBlue nine new daily departures from Long Beach.

Polish carrier LOT trials Bali schedule
Polish flag carrier LOT Polish Airlines is trialing a 2X-weekly nonstop service from Warsaw Chopin International to Ngurah Rai International in Bali, Indonesia. The service will use Boeing 787-8 aircraft with a three-class 252 seating layout, and will be run as a charter operation in conjunction with a Polish tour operator.

Lufthansa 1H net profit falls 55%, lowers full-year outlook
Lufthansa Group delivered a first-half net profit of €429 million ($463.3 million), down 55% from a net profit of €954 million a year ago. The German carrier said the results were slightly below the prior-year numbers, excluding one-off effects. The 2015 first-half result included a positive €503 million effect from the early conversion of US-based JetBlue convertible bonds.

Pegasus starts flying Leap-1A-powered A320neo
Turkish budget carrier Pegasus has started scheduled service with the first Airbus A320neo powered by Leap-1A engines, manufacturer CFM International confirms. The start of revenue flights with the Leap-1A-equipped twinjet began with a domestic flight from Istanbul to Antalya which departed at 09:30 today, online flight tracking services indicate. Three more flights between that city-pair were completed by 15:25.

United Airlines is introducing a new business class concept called Polaris to balance capacity in the cabin and comfort for travelers. The seats' kaleidoscopic arrangement gives all business class passengers direct access to aisles.

Baltimore’s BWI Airport sees first British Airways Dreamliner service
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) saw its first scheduled landing of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner Aug. 1 as a British Airways nonstop from London Heathrow made its inaugural flight to Baltimore, Maryland. The aircraft arrived at 8:11 p.m. EST, 51 minutes behind schedule, as thunderstorms moved through the Baltimore region.

Typhoon Nida Hits Hong Kong, Flights Cancelled
Typhoon Nida battered Hong Kong on Tuesday, causing over 180 flight cancellations as the city virtually shut down, with low-lying areas put on flood alert. Nida, the first major typhoon of the season, has now been downgraded to a severe tropical storm and is moving inland. A limited number of flights arrived at Hong Kong Airport, with the first departures expected during Tuesday afternoon.

New Delhi backs down from A330 MRTT deal
New Delhi has suspended its planned acquisition six Airbus Defense & Space A330 multi-role tanker transport (MRTT) aircraft, creating uncertainty about its long-term air-to-air refuelling capability. A source familiar with the matter says it is not clear exactly why the acquisition, originally announced in 2013, was suspended.

Israel moves ahead with $100m presidential transport
Israel has approved the acquisition of an aircraft to serve as an Air Force One-style transport for the prime minister, although details of the contract are veiled in secrecy. A budget of about $100 million has been allocated for the acquisition of the undisclosed type and its conversion for the new role.

First ex-US Army OH-58Ds delivered to Croatia
The Croatian air force has received its first batch of ex-US Army Bell OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopters, which were ferried to Zadar-Zemunik air base on the Adriatic coast on 30 June. A US Air Force Reserve Command Lockheed Martin C-5B Galaxy delivered five examples of the rotorcraft that were built between 2010 and 2012, plus one simulator, the Croatian ministry of defense says.
