I think it would be fun if each of us paid a small amount, say $5, into a pot and made a guess (before a cut-off date) about the exact date the 787 will really fly for the first time. The person closest to the exact date would take the pot.

Or even without the pot, it would still be fun to guess. My guess will be November 20, 2009.

No cash coming from me...

But I'm thinking 08-07-09. (August 7th)

Jan 2010 . . .

Like I said in the other thread so related . . . I'd be concerned to hop onboard a 787 until the first dozen crash or so and they get the bugs worked out.

I'm not confident at all in that aircraft.

You'd still not have flown on a on a 757 or 777 if you used that same criteria.

But I understand you're probably talking about the composite structure.

Generally, but considering the thing should have flown 2 years ago, and has been confronted with nothing but problems, problems, problems, It concerns me.

I didn't see that with all metal a/c . . . . they had their problems for sure, but at least Boeing met their deadlines. We're two years overdue, and that old saying "If it ain't Boeing, I ain't going" might need to be reconsidered.

I'm with Pep on this. The recent delay is of particular concern; they need to 'strengthen' the structure? This late on in the game? I'll take an aluminium tube any day of the week.

I'm interested to know the stress points and fatigue nature of the composite material, though. A metallurgist friends of mine has told me one or two scary 'features' of the kind of composites that both A and B are using. Namely that fatigue isn't detectable like it is in metal structures; composites don't develop stress lines or hairline cracks; they stretch and weaken until one day they snap. Not a good thing to happen when the aircraft hits severe turbulence after perhaps a few years in service.

March 2010.

And I predict around 100 cancellations by then.

I actually had suggested it ages ago on that other site...in celebration of the world NOT coming to an end, what better place for a bunch of aviation enthusiasts to party than SXM? Unfortuantely, I'm at work and a.net is blocked on the school's system so I can't access the thread....

At any rate...party on the beach at SXM on 12/22/2012...rain or shine.

GTR time-

If the 787 is determined to be a failure, or...well...whatever...

The 767 line is still open. New 767-400ER/777 style flight deck. Take the engines and systems out of the composite hull...re-engineer the 767.

What say you? :))

I'd do it. :))

And curse your school!
