IIRC, climbing without ropes or other aids is known as free-climbing. But yes, part of me agrees with your point.

According to the article, the most recent death before this one occured almost two years ago, yet 50,000 climb it every year. I gotta say this, 1 death per 100,000 ascents up that thing?!?! I'm surprised it's not more.
