Malaysia works to regain FAA safety rating
Malaysia’s aviation authorities are preparing to take steps needed to convince the US FAA to restore Malaysia’s aviation safety rating. The FAA downgraded the safety rating of the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) to Category 2 on Nov. 11, after determining CAAM did not meet ICAO safety standards. The FAA conducted an audit in Malaysia in April.

Boeing head of commercial aircraft public relations resigns
Former Boeing Global Services vice-president of communications Conrad Chun has succeeded Linda Mills as vice-president of communications for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, effective immediately.
Chun will report to Boeing senior vice-president of communications Anne Toulouse and Stan Deal, chief executive of Boeing Commercial airplanes.

Boeing's orders slipped in October as airlines swap 737 Max
Boeing's total number of commercial aircraft orders received in 2019 dropped by 11 during October as at least one customer swapped orders for the 737 Max to the 787.
The company's net orders for the year slipped from 56 to 45 in the month, with Boeing logging 10 new aircraft orders but removing 21 orders from its books.

Rostec to design new Russian landing-gear for Superjet
Russian state technology firm Rostec is to develop a new landing-gear assembly for the Sukhoi Superjet 100 under the programme to increase domestic components on the type.
The assembly will be produced by Rostec's Technodinamika division, through the Samara-based specialist Aviaagregat, and be available in 2023.

Embraer sees Boeing merger delay until at least March 2020
Embraer has delayed the expected close of its commercial aircraft merger with Boeing, now anticipating the deal will not be finalised until at least March 2020.
The Brazilian manufacturer had initially expected the agreement would close in 2019, then, earlier this year, shifted the timeline to "early 2020".

South Korea grounds 13 737NGs with 'pickle fork' cracks
South Korea is the latest country to ground a number of Boeing 737NG found to have structural cracks, following worldwide inspections of the popular narrowbody.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) inspected 100 737NGs and found that 13 contain cracks. Nine of these were identified in a first round of inspection in October and had clocked more than 30,000 flight cycles.

China, India lead Asia-Pacific deliveries in October
Airlines in the Asia-Pacific received 46 of the 105 new commercial airliners delivered during October, with China and India taking the lion’s share of new aircraft.
North American and European airlines followed with each region taking 18 new aircraft, according to Cirium fleets data. Latin American airlines took nine new aircraft, Middle Eastern airlines eight, while African airlines also took eight.

FAA wants Southwest to evaluate airworthiness of 49 737s

Juneyao Airlines to open Daxing base, considers more 787-9s
Juneyao Airlines plans to establish a base at Beijing Daxing International Airport, which is expected to bring service rights that could justify buying more Boeing 787-9s, the carrier’s chairperson said. New intercontinental opportunities at Juneyao’s home town, Shanghai, could also justify a further 787-9 order, Juneyao executive Wang Junjin said.

American Airlines, Royal Air Maroc seek to codeshare
American Airlines and Royal Air Maroc have submitted a joint application with the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to offer codeshare services on flights between the US and Morocco. The two carriers, which currently have an interline agreement, are applying for the codeshare authority ahead of the Moroccan flag carrier’s planned entry into the oneworld alliance in the 2020 first quarter.

FTE Asia: Royal Brunei: Innovation and partnership key to survival
Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) is in the midst of finalizing a partnership with an undisclosed foreign government, the Brunei flag carrier said as it ramps up partnerships and innovation in a competitive ecosystem.
Speaking at the Future Travel Experience (FTE) Asia exhibition in Singapore, RBA CEO Karam Chand said the partnership will be finalized and announced in four to six weeks.

Norwegian to add new nonstop US-Europe services
Norwegian Air Shuttle will add seasonal nonstop routes from Chicago to Paris and Rome, and from Denver to Rome next summer.
“The US is now our largest and most important source market, and we will continue to invest in expanding our network to offer more nonstop service to highly sought-after European destinations,” Norwegian SVP-commercial Matthew Wood said.

Finnair modernisation to take fleet to 100 aircraft
Finnair is aiming to increase its fleet to more than 100 aircraft under a six-year development plan which will focus on achieving a sustainable, profitable growth path.
It is aiming to increase its short-haul fleet from 61 aircraft – comprising 37 Airbus single-aisle jets and 24 regional aircraft – to around 70 by 2025.

Tailwind and poor braking present before ERJ-145 excursion
Preliminary indications suggest the Envoy Air Embraer ERJ-145 which suffered a runway excursion at Chicago O'Hare had landed with a tailwind in gusting conditions.
Braking action before the touchdown on runway 10L was "medium to poor" up to the N3 taxiway – just over halfway along the runway – according to tower controller transmissions to the crew.

A door on a Qantas A380 was damaged as the aircraft was undergoing scheduled maintenance in Sydney.
The incident took place inside the hangar, the carrier says in response to FlightGlobal’s queries.

Hong Kong cargo giant handles 104 freighters in a single day
Hong Kong International Airport's largest independent cargo handler, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl), has broken its all-time record for the number of freighters handled in a 24-hour period.
It revealed this week that it handled an impressive 104 freighter aircraft on November 3 – beating its previous record of 102, set almost exactly two years ago.

Riga Airport receives tender for Rail Baltica line and station
A tender has been announced for the construction of a train station and related infrastructure for the Rail Baltica line at Riga International Airport.
The tender includes the station building at the airport, overpass, access roads, embankment, six kilometre-long section of railway tracks and 113m-long overpass over K. Ulmaņa gatve. Once complete, travellers will be able to get from the airport to the city centre in just eight minutes.

Ground broken on Monterrey International Airport expansion project
An official groundbreaking event has represented the beginning of the expansion project at the General Mariano Escobedo International Airport, also known as Monterrey International Airport, in Mexico.
The 4,245 million pesos (£173 million) investment has allowed for Mexican airport operator, Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte, S.A.B. de C.V. (OMA) to begin construction at the airport.

The US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) says it has designed, built and tested an “open source” engine in 13 months.
The AFRL says its Responsive Open Source Engine was tested for the first time on 6 November at its headquarters, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
