MAX approval could still happen this year, Boeing says
Boeing has completed one of three key simulator review sessions required to validate its changes to the 737 MAX, and the US manufacturer maintains that initial regulatory approvals and resumption of deliveries could still happen by year-end 2019. “While the FAA and other regulatory authorities will determine the timing of certification and return to commercial service, Boeing continues to target FAA certification of the MAX flight control software updates during this quarter,”

FAA lowers Malaysian regulator’s safety rating to Category 2
FAA has downgraded the air safety rating of Malaysia’s civil aviation regulator after determining it does not comply with ICAO safety standards.  The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia’s (CAAM) air safety rating was lowered Nov. 11 to a Category 2 rating, following an FAA reassessment of the agency.

P&W lands pair of China engine support deals
Two Chinese carriers have picked Pratt & Whitney (P&W) for engine maintenance of their narrowbody fleet.
China Eastern Airlines signed for maintenance of its V2500 engines, which power some of its fleet of A319, A320 and A321s. P&W did not specify the duration of the agreement.

Video taken from the cabin of an Envoy Air Embraer ERJ-145 shows the moment the aircraft slides off an icy Chicago runway on 11 November.
The aircraft was operating for American Airlines as flight 4125 from Greensboro's Piedmont Triad International airport to Chicago O'Hare International airport.

American and Southwest push back Boeing MAX re-entry to March
American Airlines and Southwest Airlines will extend their schedules without the Boeing 737 MAX through early March 2020, indicating they do not expect FAA to approve the grounded model’s return before year-end 2019. “We have removed the MAX through Feb. 8, 2020 to offer reliability to our operation and stability for our customers,” Southwest said Nov. 8.

Gulf Air adds ‘boutique’ destinations
Gulf Air has added three new destinations to its routes portfolio that fit in with its “boutique carrier” strategy.
In January, the Bahraini flag carrier said it aims to reinforce its focus on product and customer experience, creating a personalized service that it hopes would allow it to stand out against much larger regional rivals such as Emirates Airline, Etihad and Qatar Airways.

SAS raises full-year guidance
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) now expects to make a pre-tax profit for its current financial year, an improvement on earlier forecasts.
Previously, SAS said “it will be challenging to reach a positive result before tax and items affecting comparability in fiscal year 2019.”

Wizz Air grows capacity in Poland, adds 15 routes
Wizz Air plans to add four Airbus A320s to its Polish operations, for a total of 30 aircraft based in the country, and launch 15 new routes.
With the latest expansion, the Central and Eastern European LCC will offer 194 routes to 28 countries from nine Polish airports. Frequencies will also be increased on existing services.

New Icelandic LCC PLAY announces 2020 operations
Eight months after the collapse of WOW Air, a new Icelandic LCC has emerged with plans for services to Europe and North America.
The new airline, PLAY, draws several members of its launch team from both WOW Air and Icelandic charter and ACMI specialist Air Atlanta.

IAG details business-class refit schedule for BA fleet
IAG expects over half of the roll-out programme for British Airways' business-class reconfiguration to be completed within the next two years.
But the company admits that it has been facing internal pressure to accelerate the deployment.

IAG still finalising 737 Max's place in short-haul fleet plan
IAG has yet to clarify the mix of its future Boeing 737 Max fleet, as it continues discussions to firm up the tentative agreement for 200 of the type unveiled in June this year.
The company has set out a requirement to replace 225 short-haul aircraft beginning with 10 in 2022, ramping up to peak with 46 in 2024 and then falling away to the end of the decade.

Indonesia's Citilink commences freighter service
Indonesia's Citilink commenced freighter operations on 10 November using a Boeing 737-500.
The low-cost carrier's parent Garuda Indonesia says the aircraft can carry 12t of cargo. In the initial stage, it will operate flights in the eastern Papua province, such as Jayapura-Wamena route.

BA will still have 777-200ERs in 2030
British Airways will turn next year to replacing its large fleet of older-generation Boeing 777s, but indicates it will retain some of the aircraft until at least 2030.
The IAG-owned carrier has 46 in the fleet – comprising three 777-200s and 43 777-200ERs.

Ramp staff praised for tackling SkyUp 737 gear fire
Egypt's civil aviation ministry is praising ground personnel for quickly reacting to a landing-gear fire which broke out on a SkyUp Airlines Boeing 737-800 at Sharm el-Sheikh.
The aircraft (UR-SQH), operating flight PQ7153 from Zaporizhia on 9 November, had turned into its parking bay after landing when, shortly after it stopped, flames erupted on the left-hand main gear.

Riga Airport to have Europe’s most advanced air cargo handling centre
A new cooperation agreement has been signed which is the first step taken to build one of the most modern shipment processing and logistics centres in Europe at Riga Airport.
The agreement between Riga Airport, logistics company DHL Latvia and real estate development company Castor Construction, provides a regional shipment processing and logistics centre with an area of 4,500 square metres to be built at Riga Airport within a year.

Designs for the new Red Sea Airport have been revealed
Designs for the new Red Sea Airport (which is set to welcome an expected one million visitors by 2030) have been revealed.
The design of the terminal aims to bring the experience of a private aircraft terminal to every traveller by providing smaller, intimate spaces that feel luxurious and personalised. The form of the roof shells is inspired by the desert dunes and cantilevers landside and airside to provide shade for passengers.

​General Atomics to demonstrate MQ-9 maritime patrols for Europe
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems plans to demonstrate its MQ-9 Guardian unmanned air vehicle’s (UAV) maritime patrol surveillance capabilities for European nations in December.
The company is working with the Greek air force to conduct several demonstration flights from the Greek air base of Larissa, it says in a media release on 11 November.
