FAA proposes A220, E2 engine checks after inflight shutdowns
FAA is proposing inspections and replacement of certain Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan oil system components to eliminate an issue linked to at least two inflight shutdowns.
The draft notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM), published Sept. 10, covers PW1500Gs and PW1900G that power Airbus A220s and Embraer E-Jet E190 E2s/E195 E2s, respectively. FAA proposes initial and repetitive inspections of the gap between each engine’s oil supply tube and the fuel oil cooler (FOC).

Austrian Airlines tests drones for aircraft inspections
Lufthansa subsidiary Austrian Airlines has been trialing the use of drone technology to inspect paint and structural damage on its fleet of 36 Airbus A320 family aircraft.
The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, were developed by Toulouse-based manufacturer Donecle, and will be tested through year-end.

Pegasus CEO: New runway, aircraft will provide wider horizons
A combination of increased capacity at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport and the arrival of larger aircraft in the fleet will bring brighter prospects for Turkish LCC Pegasus Airlines, CEO Mehmet Nane said. Pegasus operates primarily from Istanbul’s second airport, which has been operating at capacity for some time, Nane told the World Aviation Festival in London Sept. 6.

China Eastern, Juneyao to expand cooperation, take equity shares
China Eastern Airlines and Juneyao Airlines have announced plans to deepen cooperation and take large shares in each other’s equity.
A key effect of the move will be to reduce competition at Shanghai, since both airlines are based there. Together they will have more than 50% of the Shanghai market, China Eastern said.

Air France to evaluate A380 replacements
Air France CEO Anne Rigail is considering possible replacements for the French carrier’s Airbus A380s, before turning her attention to a Boeing 777 successor and the remainder of the airline’s medium-haul renewal. In July, Air France announced plans to retire its 10 remaining A380s by 2022, accelerating the type’s phase out following Airbus’ decision to suspend A380 production.

Lufthansa to open services to Canadian capital
Star Alliance carrier Lufthansa is to open a new transatlantic connection to Canada, with services to the capital Ottawa.
It is to operate to the city from its Frankfurt base from 16 May next year.

Brussels airport to overhaul second parallel runway
Brussels airport will rejig its departure and arrival configurations next year in order to cope with the closure of one of its main parallel runways for renovation.
Runway 07L/25R will be closed for about six weeks from 13 July 2020 to undergo replacement of its upper asphalt surface and overhaul of lighting, cabling and drainage.

Polish Mi-24 modernisation offer details emerge
Poland is being offered a locally developed modernisation package for its land forces' Mil Mi-24 attack helicopters, with updates to include replacement avionics and new weapons.
An integrated avionics system would incorporate new head-up and multi-function displays and the update’s developers are also proposing the installation of a Rafael Toplite electro-optical/infrared sensor turret.
