Gulfstream completes major expansion of Appleton MRO facility
Gulfstream has completed a $40 million expansion of its maintenance, repair and overhaul facility at Appleton International airport in Wisconsin.
The new 17,650sq m (190,000sq ft) plant, which opened in early August, is situated northeast of the airport. It features a 9,462sq m hangar than can house up to 12 flagship G650/650ERs ultra-long-range business jets, as well as back shops, general support space, and a new sales and design centre.

Cathay Pacific investigates oxygen bottle discharge
Cathay Pacific Airways is investigating how multiple oxygen bottles were emptied on board two of its aircraft while on the ground in Toronto.
The incident comes at a sensitive time for the airline, as Chinese authorities have asked for assurances of the carrier’s safety and security procedures in the wake of widespread civil unrest in the airline’s headquarters city of Hong Kong. There is no indication yet as to how the bottles were discharged.

Atlas Air wins labor dispute with pilots
An arbitrator ruled in favor of Atlas Air in a labor dispute with pilots Aug. 26, handing the New York-based cargo carrier a major victory as it seeks to integrate Atlas and Kentucky-based Southern Air pilot groups under one contract.

Central European startup FlyBosnia eyes Middle East, London services
Central European startup FlyBosnia has announced its first European route, after starting services to a cluster of Middle East destinations.
The airline, which is backed by Saudi Arabia’s Al-Shiddi investment group, began scheduled services from Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina, to Kuwait and Riyadh in June. Jeddah service followed shortly afterward, and a Bahrain service started in July.

French XL Airways in discussions with two buyers
XL Airways is in talks with two potential buyers, the French airline has confirmed.
“For the moment, there are two active dossiers,” an XL Airways spokesperson said Aug. 27, without giving any further details.

China Southern 1H profit declines 21% on challenging environment
China Southern Airlines saw its 2019 first-half net profit fall 21% to CNY1.7 billion ($247.5 million), as it navigates a challenging economic environment.
The Guangzhou-based airline reported a first-half revenue of CNY73 billion, up 8% year-over-year (YOY). Operating costs rose 7.2% YOY to CNY64.4 billion, with fuel expenses of CNY20.6 billion.

Air China A330 severely damaged in cargo hold fire at Beijing
An Air China Airbus A330-300 was severely damaged by a cargo hold fire at Beijing Capital International Airport Aug. 27 as passengers were boarding for a flight to Tokyo Haneda.
When smoke appeared from the forward cargo hold, the crew immediately ordered passengers to evacuate the aircraft, Air China said.

The first of 28 Airbus A350-900s for Air France has completed its first flight from Toulouse.
The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-powered twinjet is being prepared for delivery to the French flag carrier in the coming weeks. Cirium data shows the airline has 28 A350-900s on order.

​Bolivia selects A330 for long-haul fleet renewal
Bolivia's government has announced a $17.5 million cash injection into state-owned Boliviana de Aviacion to support replacement of its Boeing 767-300 long-haul fleet with Airbus A330s.
BoA's chief commercial officer Hugo Estrada says the funds are being made available to "help us to speed up our fleet renewal".

Tanzanian government strives to free impounded A220
Air Tanzania appears still to be trying to free an Airbus A220 which was held in Johannesburg following a service from Dar es Salaam.
Tanzania's ministry of transport stated that the aircraft failed to make return service because, according to the country's ambassador to South Africa, the high court in Gauteng ordered the flight cancelled.

PICTURE: Qantas welcomes first 747-8F
Qantas Freight has welcomed the first of two Boeing 747-8 Freighters it has wet-leased from US cargo specialist Atlas Air.
The company says that the aircraft, which replace 747-400Fs that were also leased from Atlas, offer 20% more capacity and seven additional pallet spaces.

MAKS: Sukhoi shows intent to add stealthy exhaust on S-70 UAV
Sukhoi displayed a sub-scale model of its S-70 Okhotnik “Hunter” unmanned air vehicle (UAV) with a flattened exhaust outlet at the MAKS international air show on 27 August.
The nozzle, which conforms to the flying wing’s shape, shows that the Russian military aircraft manufacturer intends to make its UAV stealthier than the initial prototype that it began flying on 7 August.

MAKS: India’s BrahMos may test another cruise missile air-launch
BrahMos Aerospace may conduct a second air-launch test of its supersonic cruise missile to further demonstrate the weapon’s ability to fly to a number of waypoints before reaching its final destination.
The tests would come at the earliest in November, after monsoon season in India ends, allowing better visibility to track the missile launch, Praveen Pathak, BrahMos chief general manager of market promotion and export, says at the MAKS air show in Moscow.

PICTURE: First Brazilian Gripen E makes flight debut
The first Gripen E fighter to have been produced for Brazil completed a 65min flight debut from Saab’s Linkoping site in Sweden on 26 August.
Performed by company test pilot Richard Ljungberg, the milestone sortie “included test points to verify basic handling and flying qualities at different altitudes and speeds”, the airframer says.

PICTURE: ​Indian Air Force takes final C-17 delivery
The Indian Air Force has received its 11th and final Boeing C-17 strategic airlifter, in the last delivery of the type.
With the arrival of the last aircraft there are 275 C-17s in service globally, says Boeing.
