Boeing triples orders in August; delivery pace picks up
Boeing’s orderbook surged in August, more than tripling July’s input with firm orders placed for 99 new aircraft, valued at approximately $13 billion at list prices. The US manufacturer’s August report included orders placed by lessors Air Lease Corp.

Ryanair adds new London summer routes; renews Brexit warning
Ryanair said it was adding 23 new routes to its London summer schedule, but repeated its warning that a “no-deal” Brexit could cause flight disruption.

Survey reveals disparity in transatlantic fuel efficiency
Norwegian Air Shuttle was the most fuel-efficient airline on North Atlantic routes in 2017, according to a new study. The LCC turned a 63% better fuel-burn figure than the worst operator, British Airways (BA).

Norwegian to cut Singapore service
LCC Norwegian plans to drop its only service to Southeast Asia early next year in a major blow to its ambitious plans to grow Asian traffic. According to the airline’s booking website, the flight departing London-Gatwick will no longer be available after Jan. 10, 2019, and the last return flight leaves Singapore the following day. Norwegian did not immediately comment.

Air Greenland ownership under discussion
The Greenland government is looking to increase its stake in Air Greenland by acquiring two separate sets of shares, owned by the Danish government and SAS Scandinavian Airlines. Denmark owns 25% of Air Greenland, while the remaining 75% is evenly split between SAS and the Greenland government. In a joint statement released Sept. 12, SAS said the Swedish and Danish governments have come to a “political agreement,” where Greenland will “look into acquiring” Denmark’s Air Greenland shares.

UK lifts PED restrictions at two more Turkish airports
The UK government has continued its gradual relaxation of the ban on large personal electronic devices (PEDs) being carried in the cabin of UK-bound aircraft with two more Turkish airports being exempted from the restrictions. Istanbul Atatürk and Dalaman airports are no longer subject to restrictions on carrying large phones, laptops and tablets in the cabin, the UK Department for Transport (DfT) said late Sept. 11.

AirAsia Malaysia wins IOSA approval
AirAsia’s core Malaysian operation has been registered on IATA’s operational safety audit (IOSA) for the first time, joining two other AirAsia affiliate carriers on the list. AirAsia Malaysia gained its IOSA accreditation after passing an audit. Sister-carrier AirAsia X joined the IOSA list in 2014, and affiliate AirAsia Indonesia was registered last month.

TUI Group to axe Malmö, Helsinki and Oslo bases
Leisure travel group TUI is closing aircraft bases at Helsinki (Finland), Malmö (Sweden) and Oslo (Norway), and instead turning to external capacity from LCC Norwegian and Danish charter carrier Jet Time. “We [will] operate with one Boeing 737 from each of the bases affected,” a TUI spokesman told ATW. Up to 150 staff could be impacted by the closures.

Primera Air to add North American routes from Madrid
Nordic LCC Primera Air continues its long-haul expansion, adding nonstop long-haul services from Madrid (Spain) to Boston (Massachusetts), New York Newark and Toronto (Canada). These new destinations follow the airline’s recent addition of Brussels, Berlin and Frankfurt to its roster of transatlantic routes.

Interjet in talks with Sukhoi to sell SSJ100 fleet
Mexico's Interjet is in talks with Sukhoi to sell its Superjet 100 fleet, following a series of maintenance issues over the aircraft's five years of service at the airline. "We're finalising an amicable negotiation with Sukhoi," Interjet chief executive Jose Luis Garza tells FlightGlobal, confirming reports in Mexican media that the airline plans to sell the aircraft.

Boeing rehires retirees in effort to bolster 737 production force
Boeing has rehired some retired mechanics and taken other steps to bolster its headcount in Renton as part of a broad effort to ensure timely deliveries of 737s, the company says. The moves come as Boeing works to recover from supplier-driven delays in delivery of key 737 components.

Spain plans to take more NH90 helicopters
Spain's government has given approval for the acquisition of an additional 23 NH Industries NH90 troop transport helicopters. However, Madrid needs to give a further endorsement before a firm contract is signed.
