Power outage at Atlanta's international airport causes flight delays
Atlanta's international airport — one of the busiest in the nation — underwent a power outage, causing flight delays Sunday afternoon. The outage happened at around 1 p.m. at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and electrical issues at a Georgia substation impacted the airport's power, officials told NBC News.
The airport tweeted at around 1:20 p.m. that the power outage had impacted several areas in the airport and officials are working to solve the problem.

Hawaiian Airlines opens new $128M maintenance hangar
Hawaiian Airlines on Thursday unveiled a $128 million, 280,000-square-foot maintenance hangar at Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. CEO Mark Dunkerley commented: "It's a much better environment for our employees to work in. They're going to have the facilities they need to do what they do so well."

Swiss regional Darwin Airline declared bankrupt
Swiss regional carrier Darwin Airline has been declared bankrupt, after attempts to resolve its financial problems failed. The Lugano, Switzerland-based carrier had in recent years traded as Etihad Regional until the Abu Dhabi carrier sold its 33.3% shareholding to Luxembourg-based private equity fund 4K Invest in July 2017. The new owners also own Slovenia’s national carrier Adria Airways. Darwin was to be rebranded as Adria Airways Switzerland for marketing purposes, although the Darwin name would remain legally alive.

ULCC Sun Country Airlines sold to NY investment firm
Minneapolis/St-Paul-based leisure carrier-turned ULCC Sun Country Airlines will be sold to New York investment firm Apollo Global Management during the first quarter of 2018, pending regulatory approvals and other customary conditions, the two companies said Dec. 14. Financial terms of the sale were not disclosed. Sun Country, which flies approximately 2.5 million passengers annually from US Midwest cold-weather locales to destinations in Mexico, Costa Rica and the Caribbean, is the largest privately held fully independent airline in the US, and has been owned by brothers Marty and Mitch Davis of Cambria Holdings since 2011.

Eurowings to install long-haul, business-class cabin
Lufthansa LCC subsidiary Eurowings will introduce lie-flat seats in a new business class, BIZclass, on selected long-haul routes in 2018. Eurowings will present the new product at ITB Berlin in early March 2018, which should be in service from April 2018 on an Airbus A340-300 transferred from Lufthansa to Eurowings and operated by Brussels Airlines.

IATA certifies GDS provider Travelport as NDC Level 3 aggregator
IATA has certified UK-based global distribution system (GDS) travel commerce provider Travelport as a New Distribution Capability (NDC) Level 3 aggregator, linking the UK-based GDS provider with IATA’s NDC initiative to create an XML-based data transmission industry standard for communications between airlines and travel agents. “As a certified aggregator, Travelport will now be able to bring NDC to their existing customer base and broaden the scope to a wider range of airlines, IATA NDC program director Yanik Hoyles said. “GDSs are a fundamental business partner for NDC to drive significant volumes.”

EasyJet expands Switzerland operations
UK-based LCC easyJet plans to further expand its Switzerland operations by basing two additional Airbus A320s at Basel/Mulhouse from summer 2018. The move increases easyJet’s Basel-based aircraft to 11 and destinations from 57 to 63.

Portuguese carrier Azores Airlines has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321neo, received through specialist Air Lease. The aircraft (CS-TSF) is one of six being acquired by the carrier via the US lessor.

Chengdu Airlines puts ARJ21 on regional route
Chengdu Airlines has put the Comac ARJ21 regional jet on its first regional route, after using the jet on services to major domestic cities for over a year. The carrier is now using the aircraft on the Chengdu-Shangrao route. Shangrao is a city in northwest of Jiangxi province.

Leonardo test fires Sidewinder from M-346
Leonardo has continued development work on the attack variant of its M-346 trainer, performing a successful test firing of a Raytheon AIM-9L Sidewinder air-to-air missile from the platform. Conducted at Italy's Salto del Quirra test range off the coast of Sardinia, the firing validates the safe separation of the munition from the aircraft.

Lockheed and Aerion to develop supersonic business jet
Lockheed Martin has partnered with Aerion to launch a year-long feasibility study of a new configuration of the supersonic AS2 business jet featuring three high-bypass GE Aviation engines, the companies announced on 15 September. The collaboration could lead a production go-ahead for Aerion’s 14-year-old quest to develop a commercial, 12-seat supersonic aircraft.

Pilatus prepares to make its mark with "super-versatile" PC-24
Pilatus Aircraft’s hugely anticipated PC-24 business jet was awarded European and US type certification on 7 December after a 30-month flight-test campaign, which was completed on time and without incident. The first production superlight twin, bearing the registration N124AF, will be flown in January 2018 to US fractional ownership company and long-time Pilatus customer PlaneSense, which hopes to place it into service by the end of the first quarter.
