Qatar Airways to buy nearly 10% of Cathay
Qatar Airways has entered an agreement to purchase close to 10% of Cathay Pacific. The Middle Eastern carrier will purchase 378.2 million shares from Kingboard Chemical, Kingboard Investments and Kingboard Laminates for HK$5.16 billion ($661 million). This amounts to 9.61% of Cathay's shares.

Emirates identifies initial routes for 777 first-class revamp
Middle Eastern carrier Emirates is to deploy a new Boeing 777-300ER first-class cabin initially on the Brussels and Geneva routes. The airline is set to unveil the new first-class product at the Dubai air show on 12 November.

IAG lauds ownership-cost benefit of Level A330s
IAG has stressed that the ownership cost benefits of budget carrier Level's Airbus A330s outweigh the additional expenditure from having lower powerplant efficiency. The airline has two A330-200s and is set to introduce three more for the next phase of its expansion.

Two years ago, the Dubai air show’s surprise deal followed the appearance of a nondescript press notice, which pointed simply to an “announcement” between the United Arab Emirates air force and Saab. Far from concerning a new support deal or sales pitch, the briefing was about an almost $1.3 billion order for a fleet of cutting-edge surveillance aircraft. Based on Bombardier’s Global 6000 long-range business jet, and referred to as a swing-role surveillance system, this promises to be a transformational capability for the UAE. Its initial order was for a pair of aircraft, and a third was formally added earlier this year.

Germany signs for P-3C Orion system upgrade
The German navy will continue operations with its Lockheed Martin P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft until 2035, with Berlin having signed a $158 million contract for modernisation work to be performed over the next five years. Announced by Lockheed on 1 November, the deal will equip the navy's fleet of eight P-3Cs with the company's airborne tactical mission system, including new acoustic processors. To be completed by 2022, associated work includes structural upgrades and updated cockpit systems, including to the aged type's instrument flight rules capability.

Israel launches Blue Flag exercise
Israel's Blue Flag exercise began on 2 November, with the activity attracting a record number of participating air forces. During the two-week exercise, 70 aircraft will train in collaboration with the Israeli air force's Lockheed Martin F-16C-equipped "Red squadron" aggressor unit, based at Uvda air base. The previous Blue Flag-series event, staged in 2015, attracted four foreign nations.

Bombardier sees 'signs of stabilisation' in business jet market
Bombardier recorded a five-unit slide in business jet deliveries during the third quarter, reflecting continued soft demand for its Learjet product line and a fragile international marketplace. But the Canadian airframer says it is seeing "signs of stabilisation" and is confident it will hit its 2017 delivery target of 135 units as it heads into the "seasonally strongest quarter of the year".

Southwest adds 4 cities to nonstop roster at Calif. airport

ATC reform called critical to 2028 Olympics in L.A.
Mayor Sylvia Ballin of San Fernando, Calif., is calling on Congress to take action to modernize the nation's dated ATC infrastructure. "With the Olympics coming to Los Angeles in 2028, our region is laser-focused on developing and improving critical infrastructure to be able to adequately support this global event," Ballin writes.

American Airlines threw a party last week at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to honor Bette Nash, a flight attendant who has been with the carrier for 60 years. Nash was 21 when she began her career with Eastern Airlines, now American Airlines, in 1957.

Southwest launches new international flights from Fort Lauderdale
Southwest Airlines launched three new nonstop international routes from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) Nov. 5, including its first daily service to British Overseas Territory Turks and Caicos Islands’ Providenciales International Airport (PLS). The Dallas-based carrier also introduced new service between FLL and airports in San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO) and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (PUJ) the same day, part of the company’s stated efforts to increase brand awareness and foreign points of sale in the Caribbean and Central America.

Edelwess Air to lease A320s from Macquarie Group
Swiss International Air Lines’ (SWISS) subsidiary Edelweiss Air will add three leased Lufthansa Airbus A320s from Macquarie Group as part of its expansion plans. The Swiss airline will take delivery of two A320s in April 2018 and the third aircraft in June 2018. In July, Edelweiss announced plans to expand its network by 20% in summer 2018, adding 11 new destinations and reaching a total of 62 destinations in 28 countries.
