CSeries completes London City airport validation flights
Bombardier on 23 March completed CSeries validation tests at London City airport and expects to receive certification to operate commercial flights to the facility in as little as six to eight weeks.

Alaska plans to retire Virgin America name in 2019
Alaska Airlines has announced plans to retire the Virgin America brand in 2019. The airline said, "[M]any of the elements you love about Virgin America will live on, paired with Alaska's unbeatable performance and top-rated customer service." Alaska recently announced the addition of 21 new markets and plans to introduce redesigned cabins with new seats and amenities in 2018.

American Airlines to buy stake in China Southern
American Airlines is in negotiations to buy a stake in China Southern Airlines in an effort to strengthen both carriers’ position on Sino-US routes, two industry sources said. According to news reports, Fort Worth, Texas-based American plans to buy Guangzhou-based China Southern’s H shares, released by the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, via a $200 million investment.

FedEx grows net income by 11% in Q3
FedEx reported an 11% boost in net income for the third quarter, with $562 million. FedEx Express reported revenue of $6.8 billion for the period, up 3% from the previous year.

SAS Scandinavian Airlines finds new capacity provider
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has concluded an agreement with Estonia’s Regional Jet OÜ, to partly replace short-haul capacity being lost by the downsizing of current provider Jet Time Regional Jet OÜ will fly four ATR 72-600 turboprops on behalf of SAS from August. The move comes following Danish airline Jet Time’s decision to cut its turboprop fleet as it attempts to reorganize after experiencing financial difficulties.

SWISS to begin CS100 operations from Geneva
Lufthansa subsidiary Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) is set to renew its Geneva-based aircraft allocation from Airbus A320s to an all-Bombardier CSeries 100/300 fleet. The first aircraft, a CS100, will begin operations March 26 from Geneva on intra-European services to destinations such as London Heathrow, Dublin and Athens.

United and Continental Micronesia to merge in April
United Airlines and its Continental Micronesia subsidiary will merge on 1 April, completing a process that began in 2010. Guam-based Continental Micronesia, while branded "United" to passengers, has operated as an independent subsidiary of the United-Continental Airlines merger in 2010. The Continental and Continental Micronesia brands disappeared in 2012.

Major makeover for Greek regional airports
Germany airport management company Fraport has detailed plans to modernize and develop 14 Greek airports. Local arm Fraport Greece plans to invest a minimum of €330 million ($355 million) through 2021 to upgrade the airports’ facilities, with the intention of improving the travel experience and preparing for an anticipated uptick in passenger traffic. The company has a 40-year operating concession at the 14 airports.

Poland shoots down used F-16A/B acquisition
Poland has ruled out purchasing second-hand Lockheed Martin F-16A/Bs to expand its air force, citing excessive modernisation costs. “We are not going to buy used older versions of the F-16,” deputy minister for national defence Bartosz Kownacki told a parliamentary committee examining the modernisation of the country’s armed forces on 22 March.

France launches F4-standard Rafale development
France’s defence ministry has launched development work on the next production standard of the Dassault Rafale, designed to deliver aircraft built to the enhanced F4 level from 2025. In addition, Paris is considering placing a fresh order for the multirole type under an agreement for a fifth tranche of aircraft.

Mixed signals around MRCA fighter deal
Kuala Lumpur appears to be sending mixed signals about the status of its multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA) acquisition to replace its Mikoyan MiG-29s with 18 modern fighters. This year’s Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) saw three major European manufacturers campaign at the show: Dassault, BAE Systems, and Saab.
