Boeing-Comac JV selects Zhoushan for 737 completion site
Boeing 737s will be completed and delivered to Chinese customers from the island-city of Zhoushan on China’s mid-eastern coast under an agreement announced on 28 October. The announced location of the 737 completion centre comes 13 months after the joint venture of Boeing and Comac was formed, with additional financial support from the Chinese government.

Airbus, SIAEC create MRO joint venture
Airbus and SIA Engineering Co. (SIAEC) have incorporated a new joint venture (JV) maintenance and overhaul (MRO) company—Heavy Maintenance Singapore Services (HMS Services)—which will begin operations in December. The JV was first announced at the Singapore Airshow. SIAEC holds a 65% equity stake in HMS Services; Airbus holds 35%.

Boeing raises long-term forecast for air freighters
Boeing projects a market demand for 930 new factory-built freighter aircraft, valued at $270 billion, over the next 20 years. Nearly 60% will be large freighters, according to the manufacturer’s biennial World Air Cargo Forecast released Oct. 26. The market will also see 1,440 passenger-to-freighter conversion aircraft introduced over the next 20 years. The report forecasts 1,130 aircraft will be retired.

Avolon acquisitions boost 3Q statistics
Ireland-based lessor Avolon recorded a 67% increase in its fleet of owned, managed and committed airliners for 3Q 2016 compared to the same period a year ago, the company said. The number of aircraft rose from 258 to 432. The past quarter has seen Avolon—recently acquired by Chinese company Bohai Leasing—take on 45 aircraft from the portfolio of fellow-lessor GECAS for $2 billion.

Alaska Airlines was first airline to embrace the selling power of the internet
Alaska Airlines was a pioneer in using the internet to sell tickets. In 1995, Bill Ayer, who was then a vice president at the airline, touted the new service as a "truly unique vehicle for marketing and selling because it puts our product at the fingertips of customers -- any time of the day or night." The world will celebrate Internet Day on Oct. 29, commemorating the first time computers at UCLA and Stanford University made a host-to-host connection.

American Airlines Plane Catches Fire At O’Hare
An American Airlines Boeing 767 aborted takeoff at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport on Friday after an engine caught fire. American flight AA383, about to depart for Miami with 161 passengers and nine crew onboard, abandoned takeoff and was evacuated with only minor injuries.

FedEx Plane Catches Fire At FLL
A FedEx DC10 cargo plane caught fire at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport on Friday after the landing gear collapsed. The airport was closed as firefighters responded to the incident, but reopened at 7pm local time.

IAG Profit Hit By Currency Weakness
International Airlines Group reported a drop in operating profit in the third quarter, blaming a “tough operating environment”. IAG, parent of British Airways and Iberia, said operating profit before exceptional items was down 3.6 percent at EUR€1.205 billion. Net profit for the three months was EUR€930 million, up 9.9 percent from last year.

JetBlue bolsters partnership with JetSuite
JetBlue has invested in private jet service company JetSuite, which was started seven years ago by former JetBlue executives. JetBlue has purchased a minority stake in the company and will have a seat on the board of directors. "JetBlue and JetSuite share a passion for delivering a high-quality customer experience at a competitive price point in underserved markets," said Robin Hayes, president and CEO of JetBlue. "Our investment in JetSuite makes sense as we continue to execute on our west coast plan and invest in innovative ideas that reflect the disruptive spirit of JetBlue."

JetBlue rolls out amenity kits with Hollywood style
JetBlue's new amenity kits are being put together by the fashion accessories company Hayward Luxury. The new kits aim to bring "classic Hollywood sophistication to air travel" and will be offered as part of the company's premier Mint experience before year's end.

Lufthansa phases out last Boeing 737 after nearly 50 years
Lufthansa will phase out its last Boeing 737 on Oct. 29 after completing a flight from Milan to Frankfurt. The German airline’s last aircraft, a 737-300, marks a historical move as the Boeing twin-engine narrowbody has been in service for nearly 50 years.

SkyWest 3Q net profit up 14% to $41 million
Utah-based SkyWest, parent of regional carriers SkyWest Airlines and ExpressJet Airlines, reported a net profit of $41.3 million for the 2016 third quarter, up 13.9% from the company’s $36.3 million net income in 3Q 2015. Operating revenue for SkyWest and its subsidiaries grew 0.7% year-over-year (YOY) in the third quarter to $799.8 million. SkyWest attributed the revenue performance to the net impact of adding 24 new Embraer E175 aircraft, combined with “economic improvements in certain existing flying arrangements,” partially offset by the removal of 38 aircraft over the past 12 months.

Ukraine International Airlines implements Amadeus system
Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) has completed the transfer over to Amadeus Altea Passenger Service System and PROS Origin & Destination Revenue Management System. The carrier said the move was necessary to start its ambitious business plan to boost network operations. By 2021, the carrier expects to enhance its fleet up to 91 aircraft, increase passenger traffic, and carry over 20 million travelers annually.

United Parcel Service on Thursday reported that revenue increased across all of its services as it looks towards the all-important holiday season.

Las Vegas airport sees sustained growth in passenger traffic
US passenger airlines servicing McCarran International Airport are reporting significant jumps in passengers traveling to and from Las Vegas, demonstrating the key role carriers continue to play as drivers of jobs and economic growth in the region. "Events and conventions are still bringing in the passenger traffic, but there's also an ongoing appeal to just come to Las Vegas," said airport spokesman Chris Jones.

DOD advances on swarming drone concept
The US Defense Department's Strategic Capabilities Office (SCO) is advancing its swarming drone concept, a key asset in the department’s wider third offset strategy. During a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington this week, DOD Secretary Ash Carter teased news on the SCO’s swarming drones operating on the sea and in the air.

RAF Sentinel fleet unaffected until at least March
The UK Royal Air Force will continue to operate its entire fleet of Raytheon Sentinel R1 surveillance aircraft until at least March 2017, despite plans that should have seen one example retired two months ago. November 2015's Strategic Defense and Security Review (SDSR) indicated that one of the five-strong fleet would leave service in September 2016, but this has now been pushed back to March next year at the earliest.
