EASA awards type certificate to Bombardier CS300
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has awarded type certification to the Bombardier CS300, the larger version of the CSeries slated to enter service with Latvian carrier airBaltic in the 2016 fourth quarter. EASA’s validation follows the CS300 aircraft type certification awarded by Transport Canada in July. The CS300 jetliner—the second CS300 flight test vehicle—embarked on a series of European and Middle Eastern route-proving flights at the end of September.

Intrepid Aviation cancels two Boeing 777-300ERs, buys two 747-8Fs
Stamford, Connecticut-based commercial aircraft lessor Intrepid Aviation has revised a firm purchase commitment with Boeing for six 777-300ERs, canceling two of the 777-300ERs in favor of two new 747-8 freighters. At list prices, two 777-300ERs are a $679.2 million investment. Two 747-8 freighters are list-priced at $758.2 million.

Airbus, Boeing September commercial aircraft orders top $11.1 billion
Airbus and Boeing booked over $11.1 billion in combined commercial aircraft orders in September. Boeing logged firm orders for 55 aircraft from six customers valued at approximately $6.02 billion total, while Airbus firmed orders for 41 aircraft from three customers, valued at approximately $5.11 billion total. All order values are based on 2016 list prices. Boeing’s September orders* peaked with a firm booking from Shenzhen, China-based Donghai Airlines for 25 737 MAX 8 aircraft, valued at $2.75 billion, an order originally announced at the Farnborough Airshow in July.

Air Europa, Turkish Airlines to codeshare
Spain-based SkyTeam member Air Europa and Star Alliance member Turkish Airlines have implemented a codeshare agreement, effective Oct. 1. Under the codeshare agreement, Air Europa has added its UX designator code on Turkish Airlines flights between Istanbul Ataturk-Madrid Barajas.

Etihad Airways Partners align loyalty programs
Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways Partners (EAP) is to align frequent-flyer benefits across the group’s eight equity stake airlines from Oct. 4. EAP brings together Etihad Airways with the group’s minority investments in German carrier airberlin and its leisure arm Niki; Air Serbia; Air Seychelles; Alitalia; Indian airline Jet Airways; and Swiss-based Darwin Airline.

Hawaiian Airlines' passenger traffic grew to 883K in Sept.
Hawaiian Airlines has reported an uptick of 4.1% in passenger traffic for September, for a total of 883,315 passengers for the month. Available seat miles and revenue passenger miles also saw increases last month.

Lufthansa Group announces 2016/2017 winter routes
Lufthansa Group—parent of Austrian Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) and the soon-to-be-acquired Brussels Airlines—has released the company’s 2016/2017 winter flight timetable, effective Oct. 30 through March 25, 2017. For Lufthansa, new flights announced include year-round 3X-weekly service between Frankfurt and Cape Town, South Africa, beginning Dec. 2; year-round 2X-weekly service between Munich-Marrakesh, Morocco, beginning Oct. 30; 1X-weekly service between Frankfurt and Funchal, capital of Portugal’s Madeira Islands, beginning Oct. 29; and 1X-weekly service from Frankfurt to both Tromso, Norway and Ivalo, Finland.

Mauritius Debris Is From MH370 - ATSB
Australia’s ATSB has confirmed that a piece of debris found on Mauritius was from Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said in an update that the item of composite debris was recovered on Mauritius around May 10, 2016.

Qatar Airways orders 40 Boeing widebodies, commits to 60 737 MAX 8s
Qatar Airways has placed an order for 30 Boeing 787-9s and 10 777-300ERs, and signed a letter of intent for up to 60 737 MAX 8s. The firm widebody orders are valued at $11.7 billion at list prices and the 60 737 MAX 8s are valued at $6.9 billion, bringing the potential value of the aircraft deal to $18.6 billion.

Southwest will add international cargo service to its business model next year. The airline is currently upgrading back-office systems to handle international orders.

SWISS orders 10th Boeing 777; to refurbish Airbus A340-300 fleet
Lufthansa Group subsidiary Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has ordered a tenth Boeing 777-300ER, to be delivered in 2018, the carrier announced Oct. 7. The aircraft will be used to replace some of the carrier’s Airbus A340-300s. The Switzerland flag carrier—which will transfer four of nine A340-300s to its leisure subsidiary Edelweiss Air by 2018—will keep five A340s in the SWISS fleet. The aircraft are to be provided with a new cabin product, including inflight entertainment (IFE) system and internet connectivity.

TUIfly cancels 118 Saturday flights, expects normal operations Sunday
German leisure carrier TUIfly expects flight operations to return to normal Sunday, following several hundred delays and cancellations that began Thursday, Oct. 6, when many aircraft crew began calling in sick on short notice following concerns about a partial merger between TUIfly and Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Aviation Group. In a statement released Oct. 5, the partners detailed plans to combine the leisure operations of airberlin group and German carrier TUIfly into a new airline group, serving destinations from Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

UTair to launch St. Petersburg-Munich service Oct. 30
Russia’s UTair Aviation will launch a 3X-weekly Saint Petersburg-Munich Boeing 737 service Oct. 30, its first scheduled international flight from St. Petersburg in the IATA 2016-17 winter season. Earlier in the IATA 2016 summer season, the carrier announced network development from Pulkovo International Airports, but most new routes were domestic.

Ohio airport looks to add flights to West Coast cities
Ohio's John Glenn Columbus International Airport is looking to add flights to West Coast cities including Seattle, San Francisco and San Diego. The airport's incentives for new flights include waiving landing fees for the first year and offering up to $100,000 in marketing funds for the first year. The airport noted that traffic was up 8% in August, partly due to additional flights from Southwest Airlines.

Transport Strike Hits Brussels Airport
Over 100 flights were delayed at Brussels Airport on Friday as a nation-wide strike disrupted public transport. The airport advised passengers to travel with carry-on bags only as as baggage handlers were expected to join the strike.

Pilot killed in Israeli F-16I crash
The pilot of an Israeli air force Lockheed Martin F-16I "Sufa" was killed when his aircraft caught fire and crashed during an attempted landing at Ramon air base in the south of the country on 5 October. A first landing attempt had been aborted as a result of an asymmetric load issue, with the strike aircraft still carrying weapons under one wing after performing an air strike on a Hamas target in the Gaza Strip in response to a rocket launch

Interesting move. Boeing made it worth their while, to help keep the 747 line ticking over till the AF1 replacements?
