UK aerospace ponders Brexit unknowns
While politicians, citizens and business people digest the shock of the UK’s 23 June referendum vote to leave the EU, one word crops up repeatedly in any attempt to anticipate the implications: uncertainty. Those implications – political and economic – will without doubt be shaped by the simple fact that the UK is, after Germany, Europe’s second-largest economy, roughly on a par with the other big countries – France and Italy. But for the aerospace industry, the UK is in a league of its own.

Alaska Airlines profiled Tony and Kara Moore, who have become a comic book convention power couple, attending more than 100 such conventions over the years. Delta’s oil refinery sinks to loss in 1H 2016
Delta Air Lines executives said they are not concerned by the money-losing first-half 2016 performance of the company’s Trainer, Pennsylvania oil refinery, noting that the facility is part of Delta’s overall fuel strategy and is not judged solely by profitability. The facility, which Delta bought in 2012, incurred a $38 million operating loss for the first six months of 2016, reversed from $176 million in operating income in the 2015 first half. The refinery was profitable in both 2014 and 2015.

Hainan Airlines to increase stake in Yangtze River Airlines
Hainan Airlines is expected to raise its stake in Shanghai-based Yangtze River Airlines from 0.37% to 11.6% with an investment of CNY915.2 million ($136.8 million) to enhance its position in Shanghai and the East China market. Hainan said a statement that Hainan Logistics Group will also invest CNY2.83 billion to become the biggest stakeholder of Yangtze River Airlines with a 35.13% stake.

JetBlue enables passengers to check bags themselves at JFK
JetBlue is rolling out self-service baggage check-in at John F. Kennedy International Airport's Terminal 5. "What we've tried to do is look at how technology and public spaces and hospitality intersect, and to use it in a way that creates an environment where there are no lines, where there are crew members there to help you if you need it, and also to create a less stressful and more seamless environment for our customers," said JetBlue's Joanna Geraghty.

Lufthansa Cargo to offer low-cost shipping
Lufthansa Cargo will begin offering a new product, “td.Basic,” to ship standard air cargo from September in a highly competitive market. The Lufthansa subsidiary said sending cargo at “attractive prices” will be made possible by simpler behind-the-scenes processes and booking via the internet. It will also include “somewhat longer” shipping dates, of three days more on average than its standard product, “td.Pro,” the company said in a statement.

Lufthansa Cargo, ANA extend cooperation
Lufthansa Cargo and All Nippon Airways (ANA) have extended their cooperation, combining Lufthansa’s entire European feeder network with direct flights of both partners as of July 12. Until that date, the network only included customers in Germany, Austria, France, Great Britain and Belgium. The joint network includes more than 90 weekly direct connections between Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Brussels and Vienna, using the belly capacity of Lufthansa’s passenger aircraft.

Debris found off Tanzania to be analyzed for MH370 link
A large piece of aircraft debris, found just off the coast of Tanzania, is to be analyzed as part of the Malaysia Airlines MH370, a Boeing 777, accident investigation. “The large piece of what is likely to be a wing flap was found by locals on Pemba Island, just off the coast of Tanzania, Africa on June 23, 2016,” The Australian Transport Safety Bureau and the Department of Civil Aviation Malaysia said in a statement issued July 18.

Glitches affect initial SWISS CSeries flights
A SWISS scheduled commercial flight of the Bombardier CSeries aircraft from Switzerland to the UK had to return to home base Tuesday morning after experiencing a problem with its air conditioning system. SWISS and Bombardier confirmed the July 19 flight from Zurich to Manchester, UK, turned back. Much of Europe has been experiencing a heat wave this week, which may have exacerbated the problem.

Tara Air to take three Twin Otters
Nepalese regional carrier Tara Air has signed a purchase agreement for three Viking Twin Otter Series 400s. Kathmandu-based Tara Air, which operates flights in the Nepalese mountains, will take delivery of the aircraft between September 2016 and early 2017.

United 2Q net profit down 51%
Chicago-based United Airlines parent United Continental Holdings reported a second-quarter net profit of $588 million, down 50.7% from net income of $1.19 billion in the 2015 June quarter. United’s second-quarter revenue dropped 5.2% year-over-year to $9.37 billion and unit revenue, as measured in PRASM, fell 6.9% to 11.36 cents.

Heathrow Owners Ready To Fund New Runway
Shareholders in London's Heathrow Airport are ready to invest GBP£16 billion if the government chooses it as the site for airport expansion, one of the investors said in a letter to new Prime Minister Theresa May. Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, has been campaigning for years to build an additional runway but a decision has been delayed by successive governments worried about pollution and local opposition. Other airports say they should expand instead.

KC-46 tanker completes A-10 refueling
Boeing’s KC-46 tanker successfully refueled a Fairchild Republic A-10 last week, allowing the company to move toward low-rate initial production as early as next month, the US Air Force announced on 19 July. The 15 July A-10 refueling marked the last of six demonstrations the KC-46 programme needed to fulfill before requesting approval from the Pentagon’s top acquisition official, Frank Kendall, to award production Lots 1 and 2. During the 4h flight test, the tanker offloaded 680kg (1,500lb) of fuel to the A-10 at 15,000ft.

Turkey receives first CH-47F Chinook
Turkey has reportedly received its first Boeing CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift rotorcraft, following its completion in-country at the port of Izmir. Ankara has 11 of the type on order from the US government for its army, Flight Fleets Analyzer shows, plus options for three more.

Why should it be different than any other CRJ? AC on all of their models struggles during typical southern summer weather in my experience.
