Boeing logs over $6 billion in April commercial aircraft orders
Boeing booked orders for 34 commercial aircraft in April, valued at approximately $6.02 billion at list prices. On April 28, Boeing reported China Eastern Airlines finalized an order for 15 787-9s, valued at $3.97 billion. However, in its month-end tally, Boeing recorded the order as coming from an unidentified customer.

CFM reblading low-pressure compressor for Leap engines
Months ahead of a scheduled entry into service, CFM International is incorporating a durability upgrade for the family of Leap engines selected to power Airbus, Boeing and Comac narrowbodies. The upgrade package will extend the time-on-wing of the Leap engine beyond the estimated seven-year cycle between shop visits already promised, CFM says.

AirAsia Group considers merging Indonesia, Thai subsidiaries
Malaysia-based AirAsia Group is looking to merge two of its regional subsidiaries—Thai AirAsia and Indonesia AirAsia—that could potentially use Thailand as the ASEAN regional headquarters for the group. An Indonesia AirAsia spokesperson would not reveal details of a potential merger, but said a study was being conducted into a potential merger of the two subsidiaries.

Air Canada signs codeshare deal with Brazilian airlines
Air Canada inked a codesharing agreement with Brazilian carrier Avianca Brasil. Codesharing flights will start next week, and will offer Air Canada customers access to destinations such as Rio de Janeiro.

Air Serbia’s 2015 net profit up 44%
Air Serbia reported a 2015 net profit of €3.9 million ($4.4 million), up 44% compared to a €2.7 million net profit in 2014. The Serbia flag carrier said the full-year results were achieved on the back of “significant growth” in passenger numbers, which increased 11% to 2.55 million year-over-year (YOY). Load factor rose 4 percentage points to 71% and ASKs grew 6% to 3.65 billion YOY.

Alaska to consider Virgin America practices in merger
Alaska Airlines will be able to choose which aspects of Virgin America's flight experience it will keep after the merger between the two carriers. "This is a once-in-a-career opportunity to look under the hoods of two different models and figure out what's best," said CEO Brad Tilden.

Atlas Air Worldwide to transport air cargo for Amazon
Atlas Air Worldwide signed an agreement to provide air cargo services for Amazon. The service will begin in the second half of the year.

Transavia to launch Munich-Berlin flights
Air France-KLM’s low-cost carrier (LCC) Transavia will launch 12X-weekly Munich-Berlin Schönefeld services on May 30, becoming the first LCC to operate from the Bavarian capital to the German capital. Munich Airport operator FMG CEO Michael Kerkloh told ATW recently the “launch of Transavia operations has exceeded our expectations.”

United offers "Celebrate" program for onboard gift-giving
United Airlines plans to launch a program called "Celebrate," which will allow loved ones to buy gifts for passengers and have the gifts delivered during a flight. United employee Mary Bucher came up with the idea after witnessing a surprise bottle of champagne delivered to a couple embarking on their honeymoon on a United flight.

Brazil May Allow Foreign Control Of Airlines
A Brazilian government led by Vice President Michel Temer would consider allowing foreign owners to acquire a controlling stake in local airlines, a close aide says. Wellington Moreira Franco, a chief economic adviser for Temer and a former aviation minister, said relaxing the current limits on foreign ownership would help bolster competition in an industry suffering its worst crisis in decades.

West Atlantic posts $6 million net loss in 2015
Sweden-based cargo specialist West Atlantic Group reported a 2015 net loss of SEK49.6 million ($6 million), reversed from a net profit of SEK10.6 million the previous year. Revenue for 2015 rose 13.7% year-over-year to SEK1.41 billion.

Brussels Airport Eases Terminal Security Checks
Brussels Airport, where 16 people were killed in suicide attacks on March 22, appeared back to normal on Wednesday after strict security checks were eased following complaints about lengthy delays and missed flights. The airport opened part of the departure hall on Monday, increasing flights to about 80 percent of full capacity from about 20 percent when it restarted a month ago.

KC-46 team working fixes to complete C-17 demo in ‘late May’
Boeing is developing both a hardware and software fix for its KC-46A Pegasus aerial refuelling system that it hopes will resolve the boom axial loads issue that has so far prevented refuelling of the C-17A. A spokesman for the US Air Force’s tanker directorate at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio confirmed this week that flight testing being conducted will help determine whether the fault can be resolved with a software tweak, or if Boeing must proceed with potentially more finicky hardware change.
