Boeing 787-10 major assembly begins
Major assembly on the Boeing 787-10, which the manufacturer describes as a straightforward stretch of the 787-9, has started. The 787-10, which will be the largest variant in the 787 family of aircraft, will be 18 ft. (5.5 m) longer than the 787-9. It is expected to achieve first flight in 2017. First delivery is scheduled for 2018 to United Airlines.

Boeing delivers first 787 to SMBC Aviation Capital for Air Europa
Boeing has delivered the first 787-9 to SMBC Aviation Capital to be leased to Spanish carrier Air Europa. The newest addition to Air Europa’s fleet will touch down in Madrid on March 16 following a nonstop 4,128 miles delivery flight from Boeing’s 787 assembly site in North Charleston, South Carolina.

Oil price drop changes plan for Boeing winglet house
A running ticker keeps visitors to Aviation Partners Boeing's (APB) home page updated on the estimated gallons of jet fuel saved by the 18-year-old joint venture’s wingtip devices. Each minute adds another 10,000gal (38,000l) of jet fuel unburned, with the projected total climbing well over 5.87 billion gallons by early March. Fuel savings have propelled APB’s blended winglet systems from an industry novelty in the mid-1990s to sales of more than 8,000 kits over the past decade on 12 Boeing aircraft types.

China Airlines announces A350 XWB European services
Taipei-based China Airlines, which will take delivery of its first Airbus A350 XWB in July, will launch nonstop flights from Taipei to European destinations from December 2016. The destinations include Amsterdam (4X-weekly), Rome Fiumicino (2X-weekly) and Vienna (3X-weekly). It will also increase Taipei-Frankfurt service to 7X-weekly from June 2016.

China Eastern to introduce a strategic investor
China Eastern Airlines plans to introduce a strategic investor by reducing its state-owned stakes to allow for more capital injection. “It [regulations] used to stipulate state-owned stakes should account for no less than 50% in China’s big three carriers [Air China, China Eastern and China Southern]. But I think this figure can be reduced to about 40% so that we can attract more social capital injection [from a strategic investor],” China Eastern CEO Ma Xulun noted.

Iberia Preparing New Job Cuts
Iberia is preparing new job cuts to reduce costs after completing the current round of redundancies, its chairman Luis Gallego said. Iberia had already reached a deal with unions in 2014 to cut up to 1,427 jobs until the end of 2017. Gallego said there was room for 462 more job losses in the current voluntary redundancy programme, which he hoped to complete this year.

Nordic Aviation Capital to acquire Jetscape
Danish lessor Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) is to acquire US-based Embraer leasing specialist Jetscape Aviation Group for an undisclosed sum. “Completion will be in first half of April and it [Jetscape] will be fully absorbed into the NAC structure,” NAC chairman Martin Moller said.

VIM Avia leases first Boeing 777
Russia’s VIM Avia will lease its first Boeing 777 from MC Aviation Partners, a Mitsubishi Corp. leasing subsidiary. Delivery is planned for the end of April, the carrier said in a statement. The aircraft, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent engines, will seat 400 passengers in a two-class layout. It is likely to fly to remote eastern regions.

WestJet Encore launches transborder flights with Boston service
WestJet Encore has started 3X-daily Toronto Pearson-Boston Bombardier Q400 flights, marking the regional carrier’s entrance into the Canada-US transborder market. Encore, the all-Q400 affiliate of Calgary-based WestJet, launched operations in June 2013, initially focusing on a handful of routes in western Canada.

Volaris to start subsidiary in Costa Rica
Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris plans to launch a subsidiary airline in Costa Rica to allow it to expand its route network into South America. “We are trying to obtain an AOC [air operator’s certificate] in Costa Rica,” Volaris chief executive Enrique Beltranena tells Flightglobal. “That process is moving well ahead.”

Southwest Airlines to add flights at BWI
Southwest Airlines plans to increase flights at Baltimore-Washington International. "This is about enhancing our breadth of service and adding convenience for our Baltimore-Washington-area customers as we seek to grow in the entire region," said Southwest's Andrew Watterson.

Military

Russia begins withdrawal of air force from Syria
Russia has begun the process of removing its air force presence from Hmeymim air base near Latakia, Syria following president Vladimir Putin’s decision to cease operations in the country. Homeward-bound flights began on 15 March, some six months after Russian forces began sorties from Latakia.
