Airbus starts final assembly of A350-1000
Airbus has commenced final assembly of the A350-1000, the stretched version of the airframer’s long-haul twinjet. The -1000 under construction at Toulouse is one of three which will be built for flight tests due to begin this year.

Boeing predicts 747-8 rate increase in 2019
Boeing has revealed long-term plans to double the planned production rate on the 747-8 programme in 2019, according to new financial documents. Output on the 747-8 line is falling from 1.3 per month today to 0.5 per month in September 2016, reflecting continued anemic growth in the air cargo market.

MRJ prototype resumes flight tests
The MRJ regional jet’s FTA-1 has resumed flight testing after being on the ground for more than two months. In a two-line statement, Mitsubishi Aircraft says it was able to "confirm the upgrades" that had been carried out on the prototype, during a 90-minute flight off the Pacific coast. It was the fourth flight of the aircraft.

American reports higher traffic, load factor for Jan.
American Airlines reported a 1.6% increase in passenger traffic for January on a year-over-year basis. The carrier's load factor also rose 1.5% for the month as compared to January of last year.

Finnair swings to $100.7 million net profit in 2015
Finland flag carrier Finnair has reported a full-year net income of €89.7 million ($100.7 million) for 2015, reversed from a €82.5 million loss in the year-ago period. “We are heading in the right direction, and we will now look to accelerate our profitable growth,” Finnair CEO Pekka Vauramo said.

Flydubai’s net income falls 60% in 2015
Dubai-based low-cost carrier (LCC) flydubai posted AED100.7 million ($27.4 million) net income for 2015, down 59.7% from its AED250 million net result in 2014. The LCC’s full-year revenue for 2015 was AED4.9 billion, up 11.4% year-over-year (YOY). The carrier did not release specific figures, but described its overall yield as “under pressure attributable to the strong dollar,” along with other factors including “[a] challenging trading environment … disruption from the suspension of flights on some established routes, and a large number of recently launched routes with a lead time required to reach maturity.”

Gol Suspends Venezuela Service On Currency Dispute
Brazilian airline Gol has suspended operations to Venezuela's capital Caracas until it can settle a dispute over the transfer of money out of the country. The money is being held in Venezuela under the country's strict currency controls, a system that has led other airlines to take write-downs on Venezuelan operations or suspend ticket sales and service to the country.

Hawaiian Airlines appoints new treasurer
Hawaiian Airlines named Jay Schaefer as vice president and treasurer. Schaefer, who has worked for Alaska for more than a decade, also previously served in finance for Amazon. "Jay’s leadership of complex financial operations, along with his extensive airline experience, will allow us to continue managing our resources effectively and stay competitive in a new year of growth," said Shannon Okinaka, CFO and executive vice president for Hawaiian.

IndiGo boosts local, international services
Indian low-cost carrier (LCC) IndiGo is adding 10 new services to its network in February, boosting its daily roster to 700 flights. The new destinations include several new nonstop schedules.

Ryanair to open two more German bases
Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair announced it will open two new German bases at Nuremberg and Hamburg, beginning Nov. 1. At Nuremberg, Ryanair will base one Boeing 737-800 and add five new routes to Budapest (daily), Malta (2X-weekly), Manchester (daily), Milan Bergamo (daily) and Rome Ciampino (daily), as well as more frequencies to London.

Turkish Airlines takes delivery of 300th aircraft
Turkish Airlines took delivery of its 300th aircraft, an Airbus A330-300, at Istanbul Atatürk International Airport on Feb. 5. The latest A330 is the first aircraft to be equipped with galleys from local producers—TCI Turkish Cabin Interior and Turkish Seat Industries (TSI).

Pentagon curtails aircraft procurement in 2017 budget plan
The Pentagon has reduced aviation procurement by 7.2% to $45.3 billion in its fiscal year 2017 budget submission compared to the $48.8 billion requested last year. This lower funding level buys eight fewer fixed-wing aircraft including five Lockheed Martin F-35As and three C-130Js for the US Air Force and 35 fewer rotorcraft for the Army and Navy than are afforded in the current budget, according to US Defense Department (DOD) officials.

Saab reports record backlog after Brazil, UAE deals
Buoyed by the receipt of production contracts from Brazil for Gripen fighters and from the United Arab Emirates to supply a new-generation airborne early warning (AEW) capability, Saab ended 2015 with a record order backlog and stronger sales prospects, says chief executive Håkan Buskhe. Detailing sales growth of 16% for 2015 – to almost SKr27.2 billion ($3.2 billion) – during a 10 February annual results conference in Stockholm, Buskhe said the company’s major business highlights included the two aircraft projects.
