Boeing Expects First 777-9 In 2017
Boeing said that the 777-9 had reached "firm configuration", meaning the plane's basic design and capabilities have been determined, setting the stage for design of specific parts and systems. Boeing expects to build the first 777-9 in 2017. Output of the current 777 will not slow during the transition, the company has said, although some observers remain doubtful.

Fedex Pilot Union's Council Supports New Contract
The FedEx pilot union's executive council has voted in support of a tentative contract that seeks better employment terms including higher hourly pay rates and retirement plan enhancement, the Air Line Pilots Association said. The FedEx master executive council (MEC) voted to approve the collective bargaining agreement reached on August 19 with the package delivery company.

United Continental to join the S&P 500
United Continental Holdings Inc. will join the S&P 500 index after the close of trading on Wednesday, according to a statement from S&P Dow Jones Indices LLC. Delta Air Lines Inc., Southwest Airlines Co. and American Airlines Group Inc. are also on the index.

WestJet rolls out first 767 and new logo
Canada's WestJet has joined the widebody club. The Calgary-based low-cost carrier announces that the first of four Boeing 767-300ERs arrived at the company’s Calgary base the morning of 27 August.

Airline customers are benefitting from low fare travel options as low fuel prices and increased seats have led carriers to drop their prices. "This is the big break consumers have been waiting for in response to lower fuel prices," said Airline Weekly's Seth Kaplan.

More flights in world take off from US than anywhere else
Of the 36 million flights in the world in 2014, 9.6 million took off from the US, according to The World Bank. China took second place after the US with 3.4 million flights, followed by Canada with 1.3 million flights.

Indianapolis may have fastest airport Wi-Fi in US
Indianapolis International Airport has upgraded to newer technology and doubled the number of Wi-Fi access points. "We looked at several airport surveys over a period of time," said airport spokesman Jeff Dutton said.

Las Vegas airport returns to pre-recession traffic
McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas served 4.1 million passengers in July, a 8.8% increase from the same month last year. The last time the airport handled more than 4 million passengers was March 2008, before the recession.

Allianz, Borealis Eye London City Airport - Report
German insurer Allianz has joined Borealis Infrastructure, which manages investments for Canada's Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Systems, to explore a bid for London City Airport, according to a person familiar with the process. "Allianz is looking at a bid for the City Airport, and they know Borealis very well from other bids so it's a logical step for teaming up here", the person told Reuters news agency.

US Navy orders 13 P-8As, with four for Australia
Boeing has secured a $1.49 billion dollar contract from the US Navy for 13 P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, including the first examples for Australia. The deal covers nine aircraft for the US Navy and four for the Royal Australian Air Force, says Boeing in a statement. “By working together since the early stages of P-8A development, the U.S. and Australia have created one airplane configuration that serves the needs of both countries,” says Captain Scott Dillon, U.S. Navy P-8 program manager.
