Boeing checks cabin system effect on smoke after 787 fire
Boeing is developing models to assess how environmental control systems might carry particles and gas from a fire in the emergency locator transmitter, in the wake of the Ethiopian Airlines 787 fire at London Heathrow. The aircraft was parked and empty at the time but the unusual nature of the fire, which originated in the transmitter situated in the aft fuselage crown, has spurred a re-examination of test data. Investigators found that ducts for the 787’s environmental control system had been damaged during the event.

Boeing Says On Track For 737 MAX Production
Boeing said it remains on track to meet production targets set for the 737 MAX, following a report on industry concerns that slow output at supplier GKN could cause delays. Boeing expects to roll out the first 737 MAX before the end of 2015, fly it in early 2016 and deliver it to customers from the third quarter of 2017.

Air Bagan stops flying due to operational problems
Myanmar domestic carrier Air Bagan has stopped operations following the off-runway excursion of one of its two ATR 72-500 aircraft at Yangon Airport last month. The carrier suspended all flight operations from Aug. 16, but has said it will be adding more aircraft to its fleet to help it resume operations. “Air Bagan is currently planning to add more fleet in time for October,” said Air Bagan MD Htoo Thet Htwe.

India Hires Turnaround Expert To Fix Air India
India is betting on a former railway bureaucrat who styles himself as "Mr Turnaround" to fix the financial troubles of debt-burdened national carrier Air India, which last made a profit in 2007. Ashwani Lohani, whose past roles include stints at India's railways and a regional tourism board, will take over as chairman and managing director next week, an Air India spokesman said.

American, Southwest hired more people in June
American Airlines and Southwest Airlines both posted employment gains for June. American employed 6.4% more people in June on a year-over-year basis, while Southwest employed 4.9% more people in June.

Bangkok Airways moves into profit
Thai full-service regional carrier Bangkok Airways has reported a 2015 Q2 net profit of THB102.2 million ($3 million), a significant swing from its net loss of THB321 million in the same period last year. The airline said its results were due to operational efficiencies and the extension of its codeshare activities including a recent deal with Kazakhstan-based Air Astana.

Turkish regional carrier BoraJet has taken delivery of three Embraer E-195s from the Regional Aircraft Group of GECAS, the leasing and financing division of GE.

737 Classic era comes to an end at British Airways
More than three decades of Boeing 737 service at British Airways (BA) is due to come to an end in the next few weeks as the carrier retires its last examples of the twinjet. BA has just three 737 Classics remaining in service, the last survivors of what was, at its height, a 39-strong fleet serving domestic and European destinations.

FedEx, pilots union reach tentative agreement
FedEx has reached a tentative agreement with the Air Line Pilots Association International, a union representing its pilots. "We are grateful to both negotiating committees who worked so hard to reach this agreement, which contains great value for our pilots and FedEx Express," a FedEx spokesman said.

Icelandair receives first Boeing 767
Icelandair has taken delivery of its first Boeing 767 from lessor GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), marking an increase in capacity from its current all-Boeing 757 fleet. The Boeing 767-300ER delivery marks the finalization of fleet plans outlined in March, which included the introduction of two Boeing 767s into Icelandair’s mainline operation and three Bombardier Q400s for regional subsidiary Air Iceland.

Sriwijaya Air takes two 737-900ERs
Sriwijaya Air has taken delivery of two Boeing 737-900ERs - the first of the variant in its fleet. The delivery comes after the Indonesian carrier placed the order for the two jets at the Paris air show in June.

United aims to bolster on-time performance
United Airlines plans to improve on-time performance by allowing aircraft to taxi to the runway before crews submit final flight weight numbers. "The ability to depart the gate on time, or better yet, even a few minutes before scheduled departure time, is a key element in our continuous quest to improve United's operational performance and reliability," said a United representative.

United expands free personal device entertainment on regional jets
United Airlines is expanding its free in-flight entertainment service for personal devices to regional jets. "Whether they travel for business or pleasure, we're designing United Private Screening to ensure our customers have access to content that is entertaining, interesting, wide-ranging and relaxing," said Scott Wilson, vice president of merchandising and eCommerce for the carrier. "Our ongoing expansion of personal device entertainment and the additional HBO and Vevo content provide our customers more in-flight entertainment choices than ever before."

Ankara will become third Turkish Airlines hub
Rapidly growing Turkish Airlines is developing the nation’s capital airport, Ankara Esenboğa International Airport (ESB), into its third hub. Its two other major hubs are in Istanbul—Atatürk and (IST) Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) airports. “We want to make Ankara a hub for scheduled domestic and international operations,” CEO Temel Kotil said. He said there is already a small network existing in Ankara. “At the moment we have 30 aircraft based there; the number could rise to 50,” Kotil said. “A small hub makes no sense. We see also potential in Izmir.”

Miami airport embarks on eco-friendly makeover
Miami International Airport is replacing its lighting with eco-friendly fixtures that use longer-lasting light bulbs. "We are actually using less energy and there is more light," said Carlos Jose, assistant director for facilities management. The airport is also upgrading air-conditioning equipment and implementing water conservation measures.

Spain Heading For Record Tourism Year
The number of tourists arriving in Spain jumped 6.3 percent in July from a year earlier, reaching a record high as a weaker euro and security fears in competing resorts attracted more visitors to its shores. Tourist arrivals reached 8.8 million in July, Frontur, an industry ministry body said, bringing the total for the first seven months of the year to nearly 38 million people - both record highs.

US Navy begins certifying new anti-ship missile on Super Hornet
The US Navy has begun integrating Lockheed Martin’s new Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) with its Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and airworthiness flights are due to start next month. The service says its test and evaluation team at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland conducted the first load and fit checks with the weapon 12 August using a “mass simulator vehicle” – all in preparation for first phase of airworthiness certification.
