Airbus wings change shape for better fuel efficiency
The wings for Airbus' A350 XWB are the largest single part made from carbon fiber composite in civil aviation. But they're also innovative in their ability to change shape in flight with flaps that deflect differentially for better control and efficiency.

Bombardier launches CSeries production ramp-up
Bombardier has launched the CSeries production ramp-up with suppliers for the CS100 and CS300 aircraft after the former recently cleared a key milestone in certification testing, vice-president and general manager Rob Dewar confirmed. The CS100 has passed the 80% completion milestone for certification testing, allowing Bombardier to move forward with the production ramp-up, Dewar says.

Air Serbia's H1 Operating Revenue Up 29 Pct
Air Serbia has reported a 29 percent rise in first-half operating revenue to EUR€95.5 million (USD$105.7 million). Passenger numbers rose by 19 percent 1.12 million, said Air Serbia, which is 49 percent owned by Etihad Airways. Traffic measured in available seat km rose by 10 percent to 1.74 billion.

Delta to invest up to $15B in Atlanta airport
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Delta Air Lines CEO Richard Anderson appeared at a rotary club meeting to discuss the future of the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Anderson said the carrier plans to invest up to $15 billion in airport improvements, including the addition of a sixth runway, over the next decade.

Ethiopian Expansion On Course As Profit Jumps
Ethiopian Airlines is powering ahead with a plan to expand its fleet and route network after exceeding its profit target for the year 2014/15. The state-owned carrier is ranked the largest in Africa by revenue and profit by global industry body IATA. Chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam said the firm had revenue of ETB49.4 billion birr (USD$2.39 billion) in its fiscal year ended July 7, exceeding a target of ETB43 billion birr.

Hawaiian retools safety video with employees as stars
Hawaiian Airlines has launched a new safety video starring employees and their families. "Casting our pilots and flight attendants allowed us to deliver our safety message while capturing each employee in their element, doing what they love, sharing their personal stories and favorite places with our guests," said Alisa Onishi, director of brand management and development for the carrier.

Qantas firms order for eight 787-9s
Qantas Airways has announced an order for eight Boeing 787-9s that will be used to replace five of its ageing 747-400s and allow for future international growth. The carrier says in a statement that it will take delivery of four 787s in the financial year ending 30 June 2017, with the remaining four delivered the year after. It has also taken 15 options and 30 purchase rights for additional 787s.

Qantas Swings To Full-Year Profit
Qantas Airways posted a return to profit with underlying full-year profit of AUD$975 million (USD$716.4 million) after last year's record AUD$2.8 billion loss. The Australian flag carrier announced it will exercise options to buy eight Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and said it would return some funds to shareholders after tough cost-cutting and tailwinds from cheaper fuel costs led the company back into the black.

United accepts milestone delivery of Boeing 737NG
United says it took delivery of its 300th Boeing NG (next generation) 737 this month and remains the world’s third largest operator of the aircraft. Boeing introduced the NG series in 1993 as the third generation of the 737. The term covers the 600 through 900 series of the aircraft, which can seat between 110 and 210 passengers. “We took delivery on July 29 of our 300th Boeing 737NG (Next Generation),” United said in an employee newsletter. The 737-900 aircraft went into service Aug. 13, making its first flight from Houston to Phoenix. “The 737 is an important part of our fleet and we currently operate the third largest 737NG fleet in the world,” the airline said. “We took delivery of our first 737-700 in March 1998 and fly four different 737NG models: the 737-700, 800, 900 and 900ER.”

United offers lower airfares to Chile, Brazil for MileagePlus members

U.S airlines are using profits for fleet renewals, debt reduction

Austin airport served record number of passengers in July
Austin Bergstrom International Airport served nearly 1.2 million passengers in July, a new record for the Texas airport. Passenger traffic increased 16% in July on a year-over-year basis.

Houston airport served more travelers in first half of year
George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston reported a 3..9% increase in international travel and a 3.5% increase in domestic travel for the first half of the year. The airport served more than 20.89 million passengers during the six months of the year, a 3.6% increase from the first half of last year

Israel insists on in-country F-35 MRO activities
Israel insists it will undertake the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of its on-order fleet of Lockheed Martin F-35 combat aircraft, going against the airframer’s strategy of creating regional sustainment centres for the Joint Strike Fighter. "We have made it clear that the maintenance of the aircraft including depot-level [work] will be done in our bases," a senior Israeli air force officer said.

ISS supply launch carries experimental ADS-B receiver to orbit
Most of Europe could hear the sound of held breath being released in Denmark today as Japan’s fifth HTV unmanned resupply vehicle launched successfully from Tanegashima aboard an H-IIB launcher for the International Space Station. Although three recent resupply missions have ended up in the sea or in pieces, a launch mishap today would have left the astronauts on board in no imminent danger of running out of food, air or water – but failure would have been a second disaster for Danish satellite maker GomSpace.
