Russia Says Will Cooperate With Dutch-led MH17 Probe
Russia will cooperate with the investigation into the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 and is satisfied that the Netherlands, rather than Ukraine, is leading the effort, the country's ambassador to Malaysia said on Thursday. Liudmila Vorobyeva also rejected suggestions that the pro-Russian separatists blamed by Western governments for shooting down MH17 possessed a Russian-made anti-aircraft missile, and said the rebels lacked the training to use such a system. The norm under rules set down by the United Nation's civil aviation body ICAO is that an air investigation is led by the state in whose territory the plane crashes, but Russia had said that Ukraine should not take charge because the rebels who control the crash site did not trust the authorities in Kiev.

Taiwan Launches Inquiry Into Deadly Plane Crash
Taiwanese authorities launched an investigation into the crash of a TransAsia Airways turboprop plane in which 48 people were killed with the weather expected to be a factor in the inquiry. The plane, a 70-seat ATR 72, crashed on Wednesday evening near the runway while trying to land on the small island of Penghu, west of Taiwan, after a typhoon had passed earlier in the day. The aircraft had 54 passengers and four crew on board. Two of the dead were French, the French foreign ministry said, and 10 people were injured and taken to hospital. The leaders of rivals China and Taiwan both offered their condolences over the deaths. Taiwan's civil aviation authorities said the weather had been suitable for flying.

US Airways cancels Star Alliance partnerships following move to Oneworld
US Airways members will lose Turkish and Singapore Airlines from the Dividend Miles roster of partners from next month. Members flying with either airline from August 1 and beyond won’t earn any miles under the Dividend Miles program, nor can they swap miles for Turkish or Singapore flights beyond this date. Although having migrated from Star Alliance to Oneworld earlier this year, US Airways surprisingly continued a number of frequent flyer partnerships with members of its old Star Alliance family.

Cleveland airport prepares for GOP convention in 2016
Flight cuts at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport were a point of discussion but not a significant hurdle when it came to wooing the 2016 Republican National Convention, local planners and a GOP spokesman said. United Airlines' nonstop destinations out of Hopkins plunged from 59 to 20 when the airline pulled its hub out of Cleveland this spring. Lost were seamless connections between Northeast Ohio and cities all over the country. "We never heard that it was anything of a significant concern," said David Gilbert, the president and CEO of Positively Cleveland, which helped lead the convention hunt. "If it was, it wasn't a large enough concern to prevent them from choosing Cleveland."

Aviation Quote

I don't think I possess any skill that anyone else doesn't have. I've just had perhaps more of an opportunity, more of an exposure, and been fortunate to survive a lot of situations that many other weren't so lucky to make it. It's not how close can you get to the ground, but how precise can you fly the airplane. If you feel so careless with you life that you want to be the world's lowest flying aviator you might do it for a while. But there are a great many former friends of mine who are no longer with us simply because they cut their margins to close.

---In 1907... At Issy-les-Moulineaux, Blériot flies 492 feet in his monoplane No.VI, the Libellule [dragonfly]. Built by Louis Peyret, the foreman at his works, it has two sets of wings in tandem. To control vertical movement, the pilot slides to end fro on a wheeled seat.

---In 1909... Louis Blériot of France, who flies his Blériot No.XI monoplane from Les Baraques to Dover, England in 37 minutes, makes the first airplane crossing of the English Channel. The event increases public and government awareness of the possible military aspects of the airplane.

---In 1909... Van den Schkrouff makes the first flight in Russia in a Voisin biplane at Odessa.

---In 1964…President Johnson publicly revealed the existence of a new Air Force reconnaissance aircraft which he called the SR-71 instead of RS-71. The Air Force decided that it was easier to re-number the aircraft SR-71 than to correct the President. Thus we all know the aircraft as the SR-71 to this day. (Q)

---In 2000… Air France Flight 4590, a Concorde (registration F-BTSC) charter departing from De Gaulle airport in Paris bound for New York's JFK Airport crashed just after takeoff into a hotel in Gonesse, France. All 109 people on board died, along with four people on the ground. According to the accident investigation report, the probable cause was the destruction of one of the aircraft's main wheel tires, as a result of passing at high speed over a part lost by a pre-departing Continental Airlines DC-10 during the takeoff run. The piercing of one of the fuel tanks by a piece of the exploding tire ignited the leaking jet fuel and caused a loss of thrust in engine number one and two in quick succession.

More thoughts on flying

When one engine fails on a twin-engine airplane you always have enough power left to get you to the scene of the crash.

Airspeed, altitude, and brains. Two are always needed to successfully complete the flight.

Mankind has a perfect record in aviation; we never left one up there!
Never fly in the same cockpit with someone braver than you.
