An attempted test of a Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) on July 15 failed, the Russian Defense Ministry said on July 16, RIA Novosti reported. The Bulava (SS-NX-30) SLBM was fired from the Dmitri Donskoi nuclear submarine off Russia’s northwest coast. Six of 11 Bulava test launches have failed; the launches were temporarily suspended, and missile components were tested in labs after a series of failures. The Defense Ministry has said it plans to conduct up to five Bulava tests in 2009 and put them in service by the end of the year.
