T-50 Details Emerge At Moscow Air Show

More details of the Sukhoi T-50 stealth fighter emerged at the MAKS air show at Zhukovsky, outside Moscow, last week. It was confirmed that the T-50 is being designed to carry heavy, long-range missiles internally, its engines incorporate built-in features to reduce radar cross-section and infrared signature and a new engine for the aircraft, offering improved supercruise performance, is under development.

The initial service-entry engine for the T-50 is the United Engine Co. 117. It was not shown at MAKS but a UEC engineer confirmed it is very similar to the 117S engine for the Sukhoi Su-35S, that was. Both engines are derived from the AL-31F series used on the Su-27 and other members of the Sukhoi family. In particular, the stealth technology applied to the 117S will be carried over and improved for the 117.

I used to say the Russians may have had the brute-force, sheer numbers to overwhelm in combat, where the West had more experience and quality. Sadly to say, that with the current Administration and its sequestration, I believe we are behind the power curve. Not a good place to be when other tin-pots are starting to raise their heads.

I call BS on this just like I call BS on all of Russias super planes. Sure, they make a really cool technology demonstrator with claims of super badA performance, then nothing ever comes of it. It's the "OMG BERKUT!" days all over again.

Judging from the usual Russian flair for vents, grills and pointy things, that beast is probably about as stealthy as the Silent Eagle. Which is to say, very nice compared to traditional aircraft, but not good enough in the F-22 Era.

Yeah, maybe one day a squadron of them will encounter one of the (what, like 6?) F-22's our military can afford to field. {sarcastic}

Seriously though, I didn't see anything a F/A-18 can't do.
