I'm sorry if you think i'm an arrogant fuck and feel the need to make nonsensical remarks about my college that gives you an apparent hard-on. Maybe its an inferiority complex, cause its sure better than where you've gone.

I already did.

There's a simple solution to their problem. Slow the fuck down! Five over is all you get. You'd think the word would have gotten out after all these years.

Chicago talk radio loves the occassional jab at Wisconsin cops - there's some stereotyping there that could light up this thread. Sort of like when they call anyone from the direction of St. Louis a "toothless inbreed". {silly}

I remember a few years ago on the news, there was this Chicago guy that got 4 tickets, one way, on his drive up to the dells. {laugh} {laugh} {laugh}

Kinda wondering where Spicoli is in the midst of all this. Saw he and a couple of other heavy-hitters on the post count have missed out.

Good thing Wisconsin troopers accept credit cards on the spot for payment of fines. Otherwise those poor out of state drivers who get stopped would have to go to jail. And it would prevent the troopers from nailing more Illinois drivers in the meantime. IIRC, it's about $200 now for 5 over the limit.

Damn. In MT, it's $20 for anything under 10. ;)

You've really got to learn to control your temper... {laugh} {laugh} {laugh}

I'm simply saying that if you learned it's alright to use bigotry that has gained "mainstream acceptance" you won't go far in this world...

I'm well past the point where anybody cares where I went to undergrad, or law school for that matter. Pass the bar exam and all that becomes moot...

But my school has a better football team than your's... 8)

Ok....

I'm trying to think anywhere that myself or anyone would have a formal education on what you're talking about, just another BS reason to perpetuate your fascination with my education. Where was your These 'Racial Slurs' are O.K. to use 101 class, UF? Get a grip.

Not that it makes any sense anyway. I'm not a bigot, i'm not a racist. But plenty of bigots and racists go very far in this world, too. Methinks you like going just a little bit overboard and trying to link this to future prospects is a bit much, really... Thanks for the opinion..

Instead of putting words in my mouth and treating me like the official representative on everything you disagree with in this thread, why don't you tell me what i've said that you have such a problem with.

My main argument is this I think:

I think the best way to combat real racism is to make light of those terms, personally. You can't do that with them all though, since there are varying degrees of severity and applicability to current times.

Problem with that? Andes agrees to, so where does that fit into your mythical argument politicizing his as left vs. right, or more practically wrong vs. right, in your world.

i know you guys are trying to play devils advocate here and try to show the hypocrisy here. The fact of the matter is that redneck is considered a pretty socially acceptable term, which we see all around from self-labelers, tv, shows, etc. It's not always sensical or fair, but that's the way it is. I certainly don't see why you'd compare it to nigger or something like that, for reasons i've stated. Wetback, porch monkey, could be more comparable. Personally, i'll find those funny in most cases and it doesnt really offend me personally. I don't really know what more you want us to say about this.

Etc, etc. And you still havent answered me about how poor white southerners are 'rednecks'. That doesn't make any sense. Redneck these days can be applied to someone anywhere, not just the south, and of any socioeconomic level. If you really have this much of a problem with this, you need to grow some thicker skin. Same with many minorities and getting too easily offended. But remember, not all racial slurs are created equal.

That's the definition.

Remember... words, have meaning..

PS. You said that "redneck" is on par with "porch monkey" to you. A term you find "funny in most cases"... "Porch Monkey" will get you shot around here.

The poor, white south is generally (if not almost universally) accepted to be the place where the term originated.
jpetekUA777 wrote:But remember, not all racial slurs are created equal.

If I'm reading you right, I know what you're saying, but someone might see your comment here as a different side to the coin - you're saying some racial slurs are worse than others (which is all based on perception ) but someone else might read your remark to say that some slurs are unacceptable while others gain a measure of tolerance.

Wrong. I said 'more comparable', not 'on par'. They are more comparable because they deal with portions of a race, and not the whole race. Don't give me that crap where I said they were 'on par' with redneck. I said that no where and you know it. Get our your dictionary for that one. The example I used for just about 'on par' with redneck was beaner.

And so what if I find some of it funny? Does that make me a racist? I certainly am not stupid enough to go call someone a porch monkey. I remember staying up all night with my Mexican and Jewish roommates looking for our favorite racist jokes about each other. That doesn't perpetuate racism, that dilutes it.

I think the best way to combat real racism is to make light of those terms, personally. You can't do that with them all though, since there are varying degrees of severity and applicability to current times.

I've made that drive a dozen times and never had a problem. That guy had to be an idiot.

No doubt. Like i've said, most people referred to as rednecks are probably poor white southerners, but that term wouldn't be applied to every poor, white southerner. It would depend on their house, cars, accent, propensity to have multiple confederate flags and balls on their pickup. ;)

You're right. Nothing based on perceptions and individual feelings is going to be as clear cut as all of us here are trying to make it. I think people here are trying to find hypocrisy and point it out, playing devils advocate, but I have a hard time believing they are so offended by redneck.

Jeff Foxworthy doesn't really offend me (much at all, I don't think). If one of my friends said "ya redneck" at me, I might laugh it off. If some Hispanic or black guy said it, and said it in anger, I'd be offended (and wondering why he couldn't come up w/something better). It can be and (sometimes plainly is) offensive.

Yes, and all this talk is avoiding context which is probably the most important factor with these words. We're using the barometer here as.. 'would you yell this out to a stranger' or whatever. If i saw a black guy and ran up pointing and yelling- BLACK GUY! BLACK GUY! it would not be a racial slur but it would have the same, if not more of the effect because of the context and motive.
