The term "redneck" is only applied to some whites, but the possibility (however remote) remains that it can be applied to all whites. Some whites believe the term originated from hick farmers who worked outdoors all day and got a sunburn above their shirts on their necks, hence, the term "redneck". Any white person could get that (or more tan, or more burnt, what have you), and, like said, however remotely, the term can still be applied to any white person. A redneck may not be a race, but it is indicative of one particular race.

And as long as the meaning of words is being tossed around, the word "discrimination" used to be not such a bad word not too long ago. {scratch}

I've got a theory about NASCAR. It's scripted, like professional wrestling. However, sometimes mechanical failure and dumbshitedness crashes sometimes makes them have to ad lib. :))

At risk of sounding like a liberal, I was hoping to get some people to realize that the words they are using are racist and offensive. Ironic given the usual political alignment stereotypes...

First off, use "Racist" not "racism". I said you were being racist.

Second, don't just pick one defenition of the word that doesn't fit then ignore the others while saying the word can't apply to you. Try this one:

n.
1) The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2) Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

A pejorative term based on race... Definition fits, doesn't it?

Like in the case of Kyle Busch getting pasted at the end of last week's race by Tony Stewart. I'd have loved to have seen Busch try to start something with Busch only to get his head spun by a left hook courtesy of smoke. But this is the Off-Topics forum, back to the topic at hand . . . {angel}

Well. In order to lable me (inaccurately, as it were) with something. You should know what the root of the word is. And last I knew rednecks werent their own race. But by all means. Call me racist. Not that I give a shit what you think of me. You dont know me, so go right ahead and lable me as a racist. Hundreds of miles away {sarcastic}

Oh, wrong.

...just like I'm the only one that knows the true meaning of the term "Porch Monkey"?

Oh.. not so much there either.

I guess you missed the part where I said "Were they originally intended to mean that? Nope, not if you look up their original definition." Note the word "ORIGINAL."

Oh..guess you missed that..

It truly is amazing how you repetedly ignore the very definition of "Redneck".. truly amazing.

Stop taking my word for it.
Go to Google
Type in "Racial Slurs"
Try to find a racial slur index on the first two pages that doesn't list "Redneck"

Go on.

If you find one post the google search link for us.

I already know what the result will be. Consider this an educational experiment for yourself.

davestan_ksan wrote:Oh..guess you missed that..
Nope, ignored it. For a very simple reason. Adding a new definition to a word rarely removes the old. Thus any blather about original definition is just that, blather. "Porch Monkey" still means exactly what I said it did.

Don't trust me, look it up.

I'll wait.

Again, I understand that's the original definition. But that's not how it's used today. I've given you other examples. This isn't complicated stuff. You're a smart guy, I don't know why you're arguing.

Uh, maybe you missed the point of looking it up... that would be that yes, indeed it's still an operational definition of the word.

I'll help you guys out with this:

Yeah, Redneck is in it guys.

Why don't you go find the people that those slurs refer too and say them to their faces?

Now though, we've stepped into a whole new relm. Working with honest to got actual, recognized racial slurs.. and making light of them. This is a whole new level. Really.

That's good!

btw Mark, I'm curious what state the tags on the nutless Rednek truck were from. Particularly considering this comment:

A real, live southern redneck

My guess is southern MN or WI, not the South. There are rednecks everywhere or at the very least a local equivalent and yes, they're not always white. For that matter, I can think of a few black people I know who are pretty redneck in many ways as well.

"Anglo" I think I've heard some people say derisively . . . isn't that how the n-word developed? People using the word "negro" derisively? Some on that list are pretty inane, though, although, if I saw a guy I thought was Italian, and instead of saying "excuse me, sir" in getting his attention, I'd say "hey Mario", not knowing him, that would probably be taken as a slur. Most anything then could be taken as a slur.

Gimme a fucking break. This whole thread has been a contest to see who can look the most ridiculous.

By the way, I call my Italian friends a lot worse than Tony or Mario, I don't think those are anyway on the radar. ANd you're saying a whole new level is making light of racial slurs. I think the best way to combat real racism is to make light of those terms, personally. You can't do that with them all though, since there are varying degrees of severity and applicability to current times.

So then, you are willing to walk up to any Italian of my chosing and call him "Mario"?

Because that's about what you should be willing to do if the Racial Slur Database, not of my creation, is to be so lightly dismissed.

Or is anybody willing to admit yet that "Redneck" functions as a racial slur?
