Would you ever call an African American person a redneck?JLAmber wrote:I would imagine you do, though you may not realise it. And last time I checked nobody was born, or was genetically compelled to be, a redneck. It's a lifestyle choice, akin to a goth or a sing-along-a-sound-of-music enthusiast and is incomparable to race or sexual orientation, which are geneticall predisposed.

Exactly. Mark's point looked like it was made in jest, nothing more - lets not turn it into something more than he really meant.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I laughed like a bastard at Mark's posts. But I also know damn well that he wasn't being funny........ it is different ya know.
Redneck
a disapproving and insulting term used to refer to uneducated or poorly educated White persons in the U.S. who are of lower socio-economic status, or live in a rural area

It's a pejorative term specifically for caucasian people generally of lower socio-economic status or attached to agricultural industry. It's racist and classist.
Queso's right. If I were to write a post titled "Wow. It's a real Porch Monkey", I wold get flamed six ways to sunday and rightly so.

Next time you're in New Orleans, look me up, and we'll run over to one of the local Popeye's in the 'ghetto' neighborhood where I live...![]()
New Orleans...where Popeye's was founded in 1972 (RIP Al Copeland, founder)

Funny, there was some outrage not to long ago about the use of the N word by comedians... I guess if they can't laugh at themselves...
Some racial slurs are more acceptable than others? Is that what you are saying? So, whop, slope, chink, nigger and cracker are right out but porch monkey and redneck are good?Cadet57 wrote:Redneck and Nigger (oh no! A white man said the n word!) Are two seperate things. You'll have to excuse me while I...

Why? While you might not think "Redneck" is at all offensive, I could find it highly offensive if used in certain ways. On the other hand, while you might find the use of "Nigger" to be highly offensive, I grew up around a very close friend of my family we all called "Nigger Ben", and he called himself that too. I still put flowers on that man's grave and will always have the utmost respect for him, as did my grandfather.

Cadet57 wrote:So rednecks are a race now? Let me put it to you this way. Whop(sic) slope, chink, nigger and cracker are WORDS. The manner in which they are used determines wether they are offensive or not. See the way rappers will gladly use the word nigger but god fucking forbid a cracker uses one. See? Omg the racism!

See above. This entire thread is going in circles. I cant think of any situation where i've heard redneck being used "offensively" prehaps im naive, but again, you saying the word redneck is no different from an african american saying nigger. They feel they are the only ones that should use it and god help you if you arent "allowed" to say it.

Or someone who meets the qualifications of a wetback being called a wetback?

No. That's a RACIAL slur. Not only that, it's my choice to live in Wisconsin and thereby "deserve" to be called a cheesehead. When it comes to race, a person doesn't have a choice.

And "redneck" is not a racial slur? C'mon, you know better than that. What makes it acceptable is that it's aimed at straight white males, and they're always fair fame. "Redneck" is NEVER used to single out anything other than a white person. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_slurs
Because I live in Texas, is that supposed to automatically make me "deserve" to be called a "redneck"?
