It's a pejorative term specifically for caucasian people generally of lower socio-economic status or attached to agricultural industry. It's racist and classist.

I saw humor.

I live next door to a lesbian couple who wants to be a couple of redneck guys.

Anyway, it was the week of bike school, and I was keeping my clearly marked Police bike at home, in my living room.

So one of the lesbians had her brother over.. This guy is a serious redneck, gigantic confederate flag in the back window of his ancient Dodge diesel pickup. He was being totally obnoxious with his stereo blasting the most annoying country music I have ever heard, drinking beer out of a cooler in the back of his truck, and banging on something on one of the neighbors cars.. Anyway, I get back from bike school.. and I am wheeling my bike up the driveway. Well, maybe more like staggering and using my bike as a walker. Anyway, he sees me and gets this panicked look on his face, shuts off the music, gets the cooler out of the truck, and later that night he leaves and doesn't return for months.

Honestly, he wasn't even bothering me.. But I think he must have warrants or something.

I laughed like hell too and really I have, in a way, victimized Mark here. But I did it to point out an interesting quirk in our societal workings these days and I hope that it made people more aware of the terms they choose to throw around and that "equality" and "discrimination" really are mutually inclusive. You can't have one without the other.

Last time I was in NOLA we stopped there for lunch near the lower 9th, and omg, popeyes was awful. And then about a year later we got one here in town. (W.Ma, to be exact) And its even more awful here.

I had lunch at the Popeye's here in Midland on Wednesday and it was as good as usual! I had chicken strips and beans and rice, delicious! I'm a bit miffed at them because the dropped the Mardi Gras Mustard, but the Confetti Sweet and Sour is still pretty good.

So rednecks are a race now? Let me put it to you this way. Whop(sic) slope, chink, nigger and cracker are WORDS. The manner in which they are used determines wether they are offensive or not. See above. This entire thread is going in circles. I cant think of any situation where i've heard redneck being used "offensively" prehaps im naive, but again, you saying the word redneck is no different from an african american saying nigger. They feel they are the only ones that should use it and god help you if you arent "allowed" to say it.

If Hispanics become the most populous ethnic group in America, in the case of ethnic slurs I guess the whites and blacks can argue about who will then be the more offended minority.



Moving along, though, and at least from my pov, the n-word is a supreme no-no. One, because I have to take the higher ground (or someone does). Two, because dealing w/many blacks about race when the subject comes up isn't too pleasant as it is. Three, I know the culture like we all do - say that word and one is labeled for life. Think Michael Richards has a bright future in comedy left for him?

But redneck? Offensive to some, probably would be to me, too, if someone of even any color was obviously using it derisively. Usually, though, it's easy to dismiss it as idiocy and let the guy know by a simple look that he's an idiot for saying it.

Nearly every time I go out of state, someone invariably calls me a cheesehead. Am I supposed to be offended by it? Me being called a cheesehead is no worse than a person that meets the qualifications of a redneck being called a redneck.

To be honest, I don't consider someone from west Texas to be a redneck. Gotta go further east for that.

Maybe it's a northern thing, but there could very well be a black redneck if he did behaved and displayed himself the same way as I mentioned in the original post. I, and I'd guess most of my fellow Wisconsinites, don't equate redneck with race.
