AR-15 questions

AR-15.com has a montage of AR-15 manufacturers at the top of their page (and even Bushmaster isn't listed up there, I don't think). I've handled some Bushmaster, Olympic and Rock River, etc. and I'm not too picky yet as to what to get. Some guys I know build their own, which is, from what I've gathered, much more cost-efficient. I'm curious about opinions about the best kits out there, favorite manufacturers, and the ideal types for home defense. A kit, from the intel I have, sure beats the $1000-$1500 price tags at the gun shop.

Go with quality parts.

DPMS, Noveske, CMMG, LMT and you can't go wrong. I have several DPMS parts kits and they are of good quality.

I am not fond of Olympic Arms. Bushies are OK.

Building your own is only cost efficient if you don't do something crazy like I did... Then it costs a whole bunch of money.

If you are building for home defense, you'll want to stay with something compact, light and with a good flash hider on it (Phantoms or Vortex). DPMS parts aren't the top of the line parts, but the are best for quality to economy ratio. Don't listen to people who say DPMS parts break too easy. My personal work rifle is about 90% DPMS factory and has been through tens of thousands of rounds without breaking a single part. Olympic parts are known for sometimes being out of mil-spec... Not to much of a problem if you build an Oly only rifle, but big problem if you are going to be using various brands to assemble it out of. Oddly enough, Oly makes some of the most accurate heavy barrels, so if you want to go for off the shelf parts for a precision rifle, and Oly barrel is a good choice.

Here's a nifty little aid to help you get everything you need.

Something to consider.. Short barrel AR's (<18 inches) tend to cycle faster and hotter than their longer barrel brothers. You might want to look into setting up one of the hybrids that has a short barrel, but non-carbine length gas system.

You can always use a heavier buffer.

I was considering something in the 16-in size, and I'll look into the buffer. I'm just concerned that getting over 18 in, it might complicate matters in manuevering should I need it.

True, a heavier buffer will help slow down the cycle speed, but then you loose the cool factor of the full length sight radius on a carbine barrel.

Do It Yourself

Here's an SBR CMMG and a "Commando" AR...

7.5" barrel, and it eats anything.

That's the exact same guide I used doing my build. :)

How far out are you shooting that thing?

The longest it's shot so far is 300 yards. My goal for it is to be able to take coyotes and black bucks out to 400, hence the brown and green coloring. It shoots 75gr Hornday Cutoms into a nice overlapping group all day long as long as I do my part. I'm very happy with it.

Ok.. Bushmaster, like anyone else will make you a hot, steaming turd if you ask them to. Whatever you do buy make sure you spend the bucks for quality parts.

As far as an AR-15 for home defense.. WTF are you defending against?

If you just want something tacticool and you are telling the woman it is for home defense just say so up front. Make sure you get the short barrel, collapsible stock, and if you have the budget, an ACOG.

If you want a long gun for under the bed get a 12ga pump shotgun with an 18in barrel loaded with Federal buckshot. It will destroy the bad guys better in a low light, high stress environment and your neighbors will thank you for not killing them in their sleep when rounds start coming through their walls.

I hear you about the shotgun - the AR-15 is just a more ultimate home-defense weapon (along with a Sig P250, HK P2000, Taurus 24/7 and others on my wish list {scratch} ).

And wasn't it ScarletHarlot or one of those Canadian gals who always slept tight with a similiar-type weapon close to the bedside? I may not be like Miamiair or Queso on my level of preparedness, but I can aspire. {angel}

I am not crazy about ACOGs on short rifles. The EoTechs are better suited for use on close in stuff.

You've got your wires crossed. As much as I love April*, she's a gun-fearing leftie. She despises guns. Back on "another" website when I was getting advice when I was first started carrying... she went out of her way to PM me to ask me to ask me why I would ever want such an evil thing like a gun. She also said that I would not be welcome in her house if I ever even considered bringing a weapon so much as in my vehicle to her place...

So yeah... she's definitely not a gun person.

* (Scarlot's is a close personal friend. She attended my wedding, and we go out of our way to get together anytime I'm in the SEA area.)

I also recall something similar, though it wasn't scarlet and I don't think it was Katie/adopim86 (though I believe she can shoot a bit), there was definitely a female member who used to keep a similar weapon nearby. It's annoying me that I can't recall who it was, but the thread was hilarious and had the male members either very afraid or strangely aroused by the concept :o

{check} I'm pretty sure you've hit the nail on the head. I knew Queso would know about women with firearms {thumbsup}

Nope, mostly talking functionality.

PS. You might want to ask your department to get a hold of the most recent published ballistics tests vs common building materials. The .223/5.56 actually penetrates less than most shotgun or handgun rounds making a properly set up AR safer for home defense than either of the other choices.

I will take your word for it on the penetration stuff... You have never steered me wrong. It was a big enough ordeal to even get a third of the rifles (sans optics) that we asked for.

Real-world testing of .223 penetration through wall material, start here:

http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot14.htm

Lessons learned:
1. Contrary to what we have been told, XM-193 does not seem to "fragment" when shot into drywall walls. After we were through for the day, we even shot several more rounds of XM-193 into the walls to see if we could get one to fragment. They did not.

It is clear that they were tumbling and deviating from the flight path, but they were still penetrating the walls.

Now, before anyone says it, No, I do not know how much damage they would do to someone after the 4th wall. But they would do some damage as they were still penetrating.

2. Remington 55 grain JSP and Frangible 5.56 also penetrated all 4 walls. So did the .30 Carbine.

When shooting rifles, walls are concealment, not cover.

3. 00 Buck penetrates 4 walls with ease. It is a great "Stopping" round, but there is a price to pay.

Until someone invents a "Phaser" like on Star Trek, anything that will stop a bad guy, will also penetrate several walls.

4. Birdshot does not excessively penetrate drywall walls. But it does not penetrate deeply enough to reach a bad guy's vital organs. Birdshot makes a nasty but shallow wound. It is not a good Stopper.

Use Birdshot for little birds. Use 00 Buckshot for bad guys.

5. The sun was shining, it was a lovely day, and it was fun shooting stuff.
