Burned FDR sets back Dana MD-83 dual-engine failure probe
Investigators probing the fatal Dana Air Boeing MD-83 approach crash to Lagos face a substantial hurdle to explain an apparent dual-engine failure on the jet, after the badly-damaged flight-data recorder was unable to provide information. The preliminary inquiry report into the 3 June accident, which killed all 153 occupants, states that while 31min of conversation was stored on the cockpit-voice recorder, the post-crash fire "melted" the medium of the flight-data recorder.

FAA should have issued GE CF6 directive in 2006: NTSB
The US National Transportation Safety Board says an engine fire on an American Airlines Boeing 767-300ER in February would not have occurred had the Federal Aviation Administration issued an airworthiness directive after a similar problem in 2006. The NTSB in a 12 July letter is recommending that the FAA issue a new airworthiness directive (AD) forcing operators to correct the potential problem. American flight 837, departing the John F. Kennedy (JFK) international airport for Port au Prince, Haiti, on 8 February with 201 passengers and 12 crew members, experienced a fire in the right engine while climbing through 9,000ft (2,743m). The pilots declared an emergency and returned to the airport for an overweight, but uneventful landing.

AirBaltic plans CSeries simulator
Latvian carrier AirBaltic (BT) is hoping to acquire a CSeries simulator for its Riga training centre after signing a letter of intent to acquire 10 CS300s. BT has a three-bay simulator center, which it uses for in-house and third-party training. One of the bays houses a multi-purpose cabin trainer and another holds a 737 Classic full-flight simulator. The final bay is vacant.

Swiss/Austrian seek ATI approval to join ANA/LH Japan-Europe JV
All Nippon Airways (ANA) has filed an application with the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism for antitrust immunity (ATI) to add Swiss International Air Lines (LX) and Austrian Airlines (OS), both Lufthansa Group carriers, to its Japan-Europe joint venture (JV) with Lufthansa (LH).

Norwegian posts Q2 profit, but costs remain high
Norwegian Air Shuttle (DY) reported a pre-tax profit of NOK125 million ($20.5 million) for the second quarter of 2012, up almost NOK50 million (68%) from NOK74.5 million in the year-ago period. This resulted in a second-quarter net profit of NOK90.5 million, up 68.5% from the NOK53.7 million of the same period last year.

ATR aims for US -600 series certification in 2012
Turboprop manufacturer ATR is entering the final stages of securing FAA certification for its ATR 42-600 and 72-600 aircraft, which it hopes to close by year-end. Last month, ATR gained European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification for the 42-600, joining the 72-600 that EASA approved in May 2011.
