Space Shuttle Hits Bridge

Everything that is sub-orbital or beyond.

Not your everyday headline...

Space shuttle Enterprise suffered minor wing damage on Sunday (June 3) when it collided with the navigation guides for a New York railroad bridge during the first half of its sea trek to a Manhattan museum for display.

Mounted atop an open-air, flat-bed barge, Enterprise was on its way from John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York to Weeks Marine in Jersey City, N.J., when the accident occurred. The shuttle, NASA's prototype for its orbiter fleet, was making the first leg of its trip to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, a converted World War II aircraft carrier that is docked on Manhattan's west side.

After hearing about their Concorde, I was seriously worried about what Intrepid were going to do to their Shuttle. But I figured it would at least get there unscathed... {bored}

New York doesn't deserve a #@#$@$(*@! Space Shuttle.

Enterprise was all warm and happy inside the Smithsonian...

...and now this.

I see the exhibition's meant to open next month. Does anyone here know whether there's actually going to be a building to put it in by then, like the nifty drawings? Because they said the same about Concorde. In 2003.

+1

Houston gets a wooden mock up... That just isn't right.
And let's get one thing straight. There's a big difference between a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician; the other is an artist in love with flight. — E. B. Jeppesen

Houston and Dayton, OH both are ahead on the most-deserved count.

Enterprise was voicing its displeasure at the move.

Even if they were going to look after Enterprise - which I severely doubt - I agree, why on earth did they get her in the first place? Bizarre decision.

OK, here's a question: How fast did Enterprise go on these test drops?

Just, if she's gonna sit there in the rain with Concorde, they've got to have something to talk about :))

Yet another reason why Houston should have received the real deal instead of a plywood mock-up.

But will the other shuttles have their interiors open to the public like the one in Houston?

We already have a mock-up cockpit at JSC that has been there forever. Kids can sit in it and mess with the dials (iirc from many years ago).

I wonder how far NASA will let Enterprise decay before they take it back.. Then find a facility to restore it.

If they had ever been to the Intrepid museum they would see how ratty their whole collection looks. This isn't a museum I would trust with a priceless artifact.

Given what they did to the Concorde (so far), NASA obviously is blind...or got told what to do by Congress. {sarcastic}
