Hawaiian Airlines reports jump in passenger traffic for April

Hawaiian Airlines reported a 12.8% increase in passenger traffic for April. The carrier, a subsidiary of Hawaiian Holdings, completed 882.49 million revenue passenger miles in April, compared to 782.26 million in the same month last year.

Southwest Airlines reports drop in traffic in April

April passenger traffic for Southwest Airlines dropped 2.1% on a year-over-year basis. The carrier, which acquired AirTran Airways last year, reported 8.6 billion revenue passenger miles for April, compared to 8.8 billion for the same month last year.

Virgin America reports $30.8M loss for Q4

Virgin America on Friday reported a net loss of $30.8 million for the fourth quarter of 2011. However, quarterly revenue rose 45% as the carrier boosted capacity. Virgin America CEO David Cush said the carrier plans an initial public offering in 2013.

Union will vote on American Airlines' "last best offer"

Members of the Transport Workers Union will vote this week on whether to accept a contract offer from American Airlines. The "last best offer" from American to its mechanics is the last one before a bankruptcy judge rules on union contracts. AMR Corp., the parent company of American, filed for bankruptcy last year.

Boeing will boost production amid demand for new aircraft

The strong demand for newer, more fuel-efficient jets as a result of rising passenger traffic and high fuel prices has Boeing struggling to keep up with new orders, this feature says. The aircraft-maker expects to deliver 585 to 600 planes this year and plans to increase production on its 777, 787 Dreamliner and 737 model airplanes in the coming months.

House agrees to extend charter of Export-Import Bank
The House of Representatives reached an agreement last week to extend the charter of the Export-Import Bank of the United States. The bank's charter expires May 31. The Senate also must approve reauthorization before the end of the month. The agreement directs the bank to begin phasing out government export subsidies for aircraft.

DOT will create committee representing airline customers
The Transportation Department is required to create a committee to protect airline customers, under the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization act passed in February. The four-member committee is required to include one airline industry representative. Steve Lott, spokesman for Airlines for America, said airlines will continue their "record operational performance and delivering an even better customer experience through passenger feedback and coordination with other industry stakeholders."

Etihad Cancels More Airbus A350s

Gulf carrier Etihad has cancelled seven aircraft worth USD$2.3 billion at current list prices, Airbus monthly figures showed on Monday.

Air Berlin April Passenger Count Down 4.3 Pct

Air Berlin, the German airline partly owned by Gulf carrier Etihad, said passenger numbers fell 4.3 percent in April, although it was able fill more seats on its planes in the month.

Air France KLM fuel costs widen KLM 1Q loss

Air France KLM Group reported a first-quarter loss of €368 million ($481.3 million), widened from a €367 million loss in the year-ago period.

Hainan Airlines reported a net profit of CNY175.6 million ($27.8 million) in the first quarter, down 35.7% compared to CNY272.3 million reported in the year-ago quarter.

Monarch Airlines will set up a base at the East Midlands Airport (EMA), hub of struggling low-cost carrier bmibaby.

CTS Engines has opened a 60,000 sq. ft. engine service center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., which chairman and CEO Brian Neff dubbed the first full-service independent engine MRO in the US.

Bogota-based AviancaTaca Holding, parent of Avianca, TACA, Aerogal and Tampa Cargo, reported passenger boardings were up 16% to 5.5 million in the first quarter. ASKs grew 13.8%. Consolidated numbers show a 23.5% growth at the domestic markets of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. International boardings were up 7.5%, to 2.4 million passengers.


Minister of Transport Igor Levitin has established a new commission to regulate international route rights after a dispute between Transaero Airline (UN) and Rosaviatsia, which was responsible for the international routes distribution.

New Routes
    Avianca will resume Cali-Medellin-New York Airbus A320 service May 19, bypassing its main hub at Bogota. Flights will be operated 3X-weekly in the low season and daily between June 1 and Sept. 16 and between Dec. 3 and Jan. 13, 2013.

    Can Jet Air launched weekly Los Angeles-Loreto Boeing 737-400 service April 21.

    Gulf Air launched a codeshare agreement with Safi Airways on the 3X-weekly Kabul-Manama route April 23.

    Flydubai has launched 4X-weekly Dubai-Sana’a service.

Cessna 402

A Cessna 402 was having problems with his landing gear not indicating 3 green, and was holding at a fairly remote town. The 402 pilot was getting agitate and everyone was trying to be helpful.

Chopper pilot: "Errr...I'm 20 minutes away, but if you hold I can come by and look at your airplane."

402 Pilot: "Look man, I'm not waiting 20 minutes for you to come and look at my airplane."

Chopper pilot: "I don't want to look at it. I just want to see you land it!!"
