New interactive feature - "A v. B"

The place for site-related announcements and member feedback.

ShanwickOceanic (netAirspace FAA) 26 Feb 12, 19:43Post
If you go to the homepage, you'll find another new brick there, called "A v. B".

It shows two photos from our database side by side. There are two buttons above the photos, labelled "photo A" and "photo B". Click the button above the photo you prefer. You get two new photos. Lather, rinse, repeat.

We'll add this to the photo index page shortly, too.

Who can vote?

Anyone, member or not, can vote using this feature. We're hoping that this will encourage them to keep on clicking, see lots of great shots, and want to sign up. It also makes the stats more meaningful, as we'll have more votes.

Can I vote for my own shots?

You shouldn't see your own shots in there while you're logged in.There's nothing stopping you logging out, of course, but you'll still have to keep hammering at it till one of yours comes up. You could be at it for a while...

There are some protections in place against gaming this, too. And they work. I've tried them {mischief}

What happens to my vote?

At the moment, we don't do anything with the data. Later, we'll add something like an "A v. B Top 100". We may also figure out ways of promoting the shots that consistently come out ahead (but I admit that not much thought has gone into that yet!).

What we won't be doing is a full list in order of popularity, a "loser list" of shots at the bottom, or anything of the kind. This is meant as a way to figure out what people like and bring that to the fore... not to show what people don't like.

How does it choose the photos?

It's completely random (although sometimes a clever juxtaposition of two photos makes it look much smarter than that!). It uses all photos, regardless of whether they passed quality screening.

Anyway, we hope you have fun with this. During final testing, I found myself thoroughly engrossed, discovering some fantastic shots I never knew we had... I thought I'd seen them all, but I wasn't even close! :)

As always: Questions, comments, rants, add 'em below.

I've already clicked through 50 or so waiting on my flight. Nice feature {thumbsup}

Just discovered this one in AvB, how did I miss it at the time?

I've noticed that the mouse overs are providing an "unknown". Can't figure out what it is supposed to be since the location, registration and aircraft type are showing. Date perhaps?

Sure about the location? I don't see it, but I see at (Unknown), which looks like it isn't getting the location. They're all like it, not just the AvB ones... {crazy}

Thanks for picking that up.

You are correct. For some reason I thought I saw a location, but it is missing.

Try again? I just uploaded a fix while you were posting. Some serious SQL fail there, I'm amazed it worked as well as it did...

Great addition to the front page, brings to light some great shots I'd not seen before which I guess is the aim of this A v B section. :)

Had to revert that change because the database join was wrong, and photos that exist showed up as not existing. {crazy}

One request: If you're going through this and you see a "photo" that's just a black and white mess of text: Stop. Click that mess. Post the photo ID. The first two I viewed on uploading were horked like that (because I forgot something else), and I refreshed before I got the image IDs. {facepalm} Just found one, but the other is still out there.

This feature is incredibly addictive. {grumpy}

When these photos are displayed, does that count as a view?

So why are Boeing aircraft showing up in the "A" category and Airbus in the "B."

{duck} {flamed} :))

This feature is one of those things you don't really think much about, till you get slightly addicted to it. {thumbsup}

Sorry, I missed this one.

The winner gets a view. However, views are themselves subject to a limit of (I think) one per IP per day, to stop people bouncing on the Reload button for their shots. So if the same shot comes up 15 times and you vote for it every time, it'll gain only one view from your votes (assuming you hadn't already visited its view page today).

Gahhh, now I have to delete all the snarkiness from this post :))
