So, I was wondering who on our lovely board has been to Kuwait. I may be going as soon as July 4th, or I may not be going at all. My stay may be just until October, but it also might be for well over a year. I'm not sure yet. Room and board is already planned, as well as 1/2 my meals.

Anyway, I just wanted to know what people thought about it and if anyone has any heads ups. I was thinking that Cornish/Spicoli/etc might have more information.

If I decide not to go, I've got a back-up plan for a nice-ish job for me, pay wise at least. Gotta make money to pay for school.

I think ANCflyer has been, though I don't know how much of the local culture he'll have seen from the inside of a big pink tank

I've been to Kuwait, but it was only for a leave transfer. I can't tell you anything aboot the city or it's inhabitants. I probably wouldn't want to spend any extended amount of time in that region, though.

Never been there and probably would rather not go. I had a chance to go to Dubai and passed. That whole region creeps me out.

I think ANCFlyer was there.. But he didn't stop.

It's a pretty boring place, really. With your American passport you can get away with murder (literally), though. It's your typical Gulf state.

I dated the daughter of a Kuwaiti Oil Sheikh, so my stay may not have been like your potential stay.

Spicoli's been there. So have I. I believe we had two different missions however. And I haven't been there since the early 1990s.

Still, why Kuwait, if you don't mind me asking? It's not that exciting and its really Westernized.

I guess you could have a weekend trip to Lebanon, Oman, or Bahrain. Bahrain's pretty cool.

Still, I suppose if you've never been to this area you'll kind of avoid massive culture shock you'd have if you went somewhere else.
The Ambassador of Kuwait to Lebanon is someone I know. My dad went to the Kuwaiti Indepence Day Celebration at the Kuwaiti Embassy here as a guest of his a little while back.

The Gulf in the Summer is miserable. People actually leave there to face the humidity and brutal heat of Lebanon, that's how bad it is.

Still, it's not as bad as Dubai, which is that hot AND humid. Talk about a terrible combo.

I knew somebody would say that.

I'm from Florida and we get some humid heat, but I've been out in Nevada and Arizona when it tops 110, and dry or not, it's too damned hot.

Kuwait has a very nice job offer for me, at least for my current state. Around $10,000/month for some medical stuff. It would help with my finances. I could possibly make up to 60,000 in about 5-6 months.

If not, I'm heading down to Wyoming where I have another job on the line. It pays $29/hour, full time, and there's lots of OT. I also have a nice house there thanks to a relative. Maybe I already mentioned that.

While these amounts may not be that much to most of you, the most I've ever made so far was $20/hour, and AMR only pays $11.68. All money helps, but I'll take the most I can get. This would really help pay for college. I'm willing to do live through Hell if it means a bright future.


113 sucks, but I've done 115 before just fine. I'll be inside most of the time, or otherwise in an airconditioned place.

I've lived in both Arizona and Atlanta during the summers, so I can handle heat, and I've done Billings/NW Montanan winters, so I can also handle cold, just ask Fluffy/Spicoli/GPI.

I was also hoping to avoid the culture shock somewhat. What is food like there?

Anyway, seems like an OK place overall, at least for the pay.

It would be an experience, that's for sure. That said...I'd go for Wyoming.

I got some pictures of a train today that you might be interested in seeing. I'll post them here in a bit. I don't know what it is. Apparently the private pax car and power car for the head of MRL/SRL (SP?). It has its own art gallery. They had cookies and stuff. Funniest part was that it was set up to keep a little dog on board. Seats were VERY comfortable and reclined a lot.

Anyway, it was a nice day. I went to a fly-in and got to tour someone's personal train.

Union Pacific runs through Rock Springs. IIRC, it's a triple main line. They get a few special excursion (including steam) trains out of Cheyenne.

Steam trains are awesome. I have unfortunately only ever gotten to see one. I do get to see the 737 trains all the time.
