Bitches: UK vs US vernacular

Everything that would not belong anywhere else.

I really wonder about the differences here in the US and across the pond. I have a really nice looking male Chihuahua and have been thinking about making a serious search for a bitch with which to mate him, but it would have to be one that's just right because my dog has a very interesting look to it. So I just Googled "chihuahua bitch" and almost every reply that came up was for a website that has ".UK" in the URL (try it). Then I got to thinking about the Crufts dog show (in the UK) I was watching on Animal Planet last weekend and they tended to use the term "bitch" more prolifically than do the announcers for the Eukanuba and Westminster shows here in the US.

Do "normal" people in the UK more ordinarily use the term "bitch" or "female" when talking about one among a litter of pups, etc?

How many non-dog websites showed up. Must have been a bitch sorting through them all.

No, they were all dog websites.

I'm hoping some of the UK people can chime in here to discuss this. Maybe some of our group from over there are dog owners.

By the way, here's a picture of my dog in-flight, carrying his favorite piggy:

Dude, a chihuahua is NOT a dog. What use do they have?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I've heard all the Chihuahua jokes by now. Fact is, that very dog, all 7 pounds of him, scared a German Shepherd away from the front gate of our house yesterday and sent him running down the street with his tail tucked.

It ain't the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog. And this one's got plenty. He's very athletic and has great muscle tone, that's why he's so heavy for his size. And as long as he was matched to the right bitch, I think he'd sire some very nice pups.

So there. 8) {cheerful}

A police officer in the Cincinnati area shot a Chihuahua last week because it apparently was too ferocious.

Police say the dog bit the officer 17 times on one hand and nine times on the other.

Yeah. You'd think the dumbass would have learned after the first bite. {sarcastic}

Not arguing for or against your pup, Cheesy. Just reporting the local...erm...whatever it is. What I want to know is why those morons left their dog alone on the front porch?

We had to keep my sister's Chihuahua away from our Australian Shepherd.

He tried to bark at her, and she immediately lunged at him. And knowing that she had already dispatched a squirrel before, and frightened a racoon UP a tree, that was the last time they got close.

Lap warmer while you drive?

On the same topic, last week I was driving to work when traffic slowed at the green light in front of me. I saw a blonde woman running across the street from her car. Then I saw her run back with her tiny rat dog in her arms. She got back in her car and drove off. I can only assume that the dumb dog jumped out into traffic. The dog is lucky it didn't become more throw-rug like than it already was.

I don't think I've ever heard anybody say "female dog" - it would just sound odd. When inquiring about the sex of somebody's dog, the question is always: "Is it a bitch?"

Thank you. That's exactly the kind of answer I was looking for.

I have a couple of friends who breed pedigree hounds (weimaraners and labradors) and they always use dog & bitch to mean male & female and refer to them collectively by breed name. It is commonplace in the UK for bitch to be used both correctly and as a derogatory term for a woman, the distinction comes in the context and tone of the usage.
A million great ideas...

My girlfriend has a Chihuahua and I can vouch for it being a vicious bitch sometimes! It jumped on the end of the bed last night, then a few hours later when I stretched out I accidentally booted it off, so back up it jumped and bit my girlfriend. Somehow this one small dog ended up with a full half of a King Size bed in the end {grumpy}

...and yes, bitch is used for female dogs in the UK. A few members of my family show at Crufts with Terriers, Leonburgers and best of all Siberian Huskies. A few years ago I was lucky enough to work the show; got paid £7 an hour to sell public tickets at a door only open for exhibitors - I sold about ten tickets over the entire four day show, but on the plus side I got several essays and pieces of coursework done at the same time. :))

{check} {check} What he said.

However I can honestly say that I have never used the term bitch in relation to canines.
One of them put a mock on his bandage; asking whether he was the offspring of an ass or a rabbit. He destroyed them entirely.

The best dog I've ever owned was a Rat Terrier. {thumbsup} Treed more bears than any of our large dogs, though a bear eventually slaughtered the poor beast (He was old and it was a good way to go for him.) in the end. Also kept the snakes and pack rats to a minimum. Along with llamas, he was the toughest creature we kept, and had the best personality by far. He was also very intelligent.

I don't know if these Chihuahuas are male or female, but they probably have good genes... 8)

Chihuahuas Confront Cougar in SoCal Garage

The chihuahuas, which weigh about three pounds each, had cornered the mountain lion. She says the big cat appeared to be angry and began hissing at her and foaming at the mouth.

The pint-sized puppies refused to back off, and kept barking for about 45 minutes until two Riverside County Sheriff's deputies arrived.

Got to admit, that's impressive. However, before we grovel at Cheesy's feet...there WAS three of them.
