Everybody panic!!

A Pandemic Is Declared

On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6 in response to the ongoing global spread of the novel influenza A (H1N1) virus. A Phase 6 designation indicates that a global pandemic is underway.

More than 70 countries are now reporting cases of human infection with novel H1N1 flu. This number has been increasing over the past few weeks, but many of the cases reportedly had links to travel or were localized outbreaks without community spread. The WHO designation of a pandemic alert Phase 6 reflects the fact that there are now ongoing community level outbreaks in multiple parts of world.

WHO’s decision to raise the pandemic alert level to Phase 6 is a reflection of the spread of the virus, not the severity of illness caused by the virus.

Great way to create un-needed chaos and panic.

It's an even better way to make sure that when something really serious gets loose, like Bubonic Plague or Ebola, that the people will act like "who cares, it's just another swine flu joke..."

Technically, we've been under a Stage 6 pandemic since the 1980's for another virus.

Swine Flu is far less serious than half the regular flu virusses; I had what I thought was bad flu a few weeks ago and one of the reasons they knew that it wasn't Swine Flu was that it was too 'severe'. Turned out I had Virul Meningitus, so I'd much rather have had Swine Flu really!

So what happens when the regular flu season hits?
What's the point of an open door policy if inside the open door sits a closed mind?

There doesn't have to be widespread initial death for an outbreak to be labeled as a pandemic. For all we know, this is just the start of something that might ravage the planet as it snowballs. It might peter out. But, right now, it's still spreading and it's spread to the point where it triggered the use of the p-word.

While it might technically qualify as a "pandemic," it is simply silly for the WHO and other 'professionals" to beat the drums of hype when this particular flu is weaker than most.

But if they can create at least some needless fear they'll have done their job... {crazy}

I think the hysteria is driven by the media throwing around a scary sounding word like "Pandemic". While the CDC is quick to point out that this "is a reflection of the spread of the virus, not the severity of illness caused by the virus", the media haven't always been so forthcoming. Scaring the public with "PANDEMIC REACHES LEVEL-6" makes a much better headline than "H1N1 now reported in more countries"
Look, it's been swell, but the swelling's gone down.

There's still a real possibility of death to at-risk people who contract it. Multiply that worldwide and it meets the criteria of a pandemic. Just be lucky you're healthy and don't have to fear it.

Mark, there's a real possibility I might be on an airplane that crashes or at a DC museum when a lunatic opens fire.

This is an artifical crisis manufatcured by people who want their 15 minutes of fame.

And before you throw your medical credentials at me, my SO (a laboratory professional for 26 years) runs a medical lab here in DC, and my daughter is a practicing neonatal ICU nurse currently in school getting her PNP certification. They are both disgusted at how certain sectors of the medical profession have blown this minor event out proportion.

I went home from work the other night with diarrhea an vomiting and generally feeling like crap. I was SO hoping I had swine flu so I could at least brag about it!! But, was not to be-back at work the next day feeling 90% back to normal.

On a side note, anybody here be diagnosed with the swine flu yet?
Down with this sort of thing!

Ha ha, you can get mysterious illnesses when living in the middle of nowhere. ;) Glad to see you reappear on the site.

I don't think that anyone here has gotten the swine flu yet, not even my piggies, though they're the small, furry, rodent variety.

My wife and I were pretty ill at about the time of the first media reports of swine flu, which coincided with my Aunt coming back from Mexico. Probably wasn't swine flu, but who knows (obviously, I didn't got to the doctor - you lose your man card for such weakness in Northern England).
A million great ideas...

I got diagnosed with "Walking Pneumonia" first week of May. Mostly just felt like I had been beaten by a baseball bat for 2 or 3 weeks, and had absolutely zero energy, even when first getting out of bed. That turned into coughing like crazy for another week, and crazy night sweats. Crap was coming up, but the cough wasn't going away. Went to the doctor...got some pink antibiotics. Turned my stomach inside out... {grumpy} ...finally stopped hacking up a lung. Never had the running nose and other symptoms of a cold/flu... I think half these morons out there break a fever or get some allergies...and freak out. {sarcastic}

The WHO and CDC are watching how H1N1 affects the southern hemisphere over the next couple of months. There's a fear that three things could happen. H1N1 could replace the regular season flu this season, thereby causing a sudden increase in the number of people contracting it. It might also mutate with the regular seasonal flu and become a new flu. Finally, it could remain an independent disease and there's a possibility that people with seasonal colds and flu, whose immune systems are compromised, could contract H1N1 on top of their seasonal illnesses, thereby placing them at a higher risk of death.

If any of these occur in the southern hemisphere, where it's seasonal cold and flu season, it may be an indicator of what the northern hemisprere's seasonal cold and flu season may be like in six months.
