Leading military figures have warned that scrapping the £4bn fleet of new RAF Nimrods will create a "massive gap" in British security.

In an open letter to the Daily Telegraph, six ex-defence chiefs said interim measures to fill the gap left by the spy planes "fall far short".

They describe the decision to destroy the aircraft as "perverse".

The government blames high operating costs and says taking Nimrod out of service will save £2bn over 10 years.

General Sir David Richards, Chief of the Defence Staff, said the move to cancel the Nimrod MRA4 was not taken lightly.

Work on scrapping the nine planes began in Greater Manchester on Wednesday.

My thoughts on this are not even fit for the Politics forum, so I'll just say this: TSR-2.

My friend and I applied for airline jobs in Australia, but they didn't Qantas.

Better hope the Argies don't ratchet up their courage and try to get the Falklands back, this time you will not be victorious. Keep cutting and cutting defense, increase entitlements... England's military will be alongside the HMS Hood.
And let's get one thing straight. There's a big difference between a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician; the other is an artist in love with flight. — E. B. Jeppesen

Zero time airframes getting scrapped? Has the MoD gone mad?

There are Typhoons permanently stationed on the Falklands now. Buenos Aires is doubtless one of the places the Royal Navy pass by when taking their submarines for a quick trip round the globe too. The Argentines don't want to start anything they'll regret.

It does seem such a shame to dismantle these aircraft. Why couldn't they just be mothballed?
A million great ideas...

Did the UK just totally give up on defending what is left of their empire? This is getting a tad ridiculous.
