Redoubt revving up again?

Everything that would not belong anywhere else.

Pep only thought he was going to make it back home on-time. {mischief}

Seismic and rockfall activity remains at an heightened level. Explosive eruption likely in coming days; could occur at any time with little or no warning.

The growing lava dome is becoming increasingly unstable and should a dome failure occur it likely would result in a significant explosion producing high altitude (>30,000 ft ASL) ash plumes, trace to minor ash fall in parts of south-central Alaska, lahars in the Drift River Valley, and pyroclastic flows in the immediate vicinity of the volcano.

AVO continues 24/7 operations and is monitoring the situation closely.

Over the last 2 hours, seismic activity has consisted primarily of repetitive events occurring several times per minute as well as more continuous volcanic tremor. Similar seismicity was observed prior to the Redoubt explosions in March and April 2009. AVO is monitoring the situation closely and the observatory is staffed 24 per hours day.

2009-05-05 06:59:43 - VAN/VONA
Current activity at Redoubt volcano suggests that a significant explosive event is likely, though not certain, in the coming days. This event could occur at any time with little or no warning. Since about May 2 shallow earthquake activity beneath the actively growing lava dome of Redoubt volcano has been slowly increasing. The growing lava dome is becoming increasingly unstable.

Should a significant explosion occur, the event will likely produce high altitude (>30,000 ft ASL) ash plumes, trace to minor ash fall in parts of south-central Alaska, lahars in the Drift River Valley, and pyroclastic flows in the immediate vicinity of the volcano.

AVO continues 24/7 operations and is monitoring the situation closely. AVO will provide frequent updates of the volcano's status and the earliest possible warning of significant explosive activity and other hazardous phenomena.

Not a time to go hiking I guess.

We will see,

I hope not, I was planning to drive down to Homer and cook mom mothers day dinner.

That and they just got most of the ash from the earlier eruption off everything.

Can we stifle the Volcano talk for aboutn 12 frackin' hours . . . . {grumpy}

I don't wanna be jinxed. My plane leaves MKE in 3 hours 30 minutes . . . . I should be in ANC @ 1500 today . . . all this volcano talk makes me nervous.

Wow, just now there was a nice picture of the new dome growing on Mt. Redoubt. Circle placed there by me for those who are not as familiar with vulcanism...

I suspect it ain't over yet . . . alas, I'm in Alaska, and have to drive to work tomorrow . . . won't be a problem.

Well nothing happened while I was down in Homer.

Couldn't see the mountain on Friday, but it looked pretty quiet coming back today.

Stick a fork in 'er, she's done.

From AVO's latest weekly update:

Gas emissions measured on Monday showed a steep decline since last measured on May 14.

IMO, the only thing of significance that can happen now is a lava dome collapse.

See ya when you wake up in another 20 years, sister. {cry}

Mt Spurr, ya up for another round yet? {mischief}

Still need that Bite Me Emoticon.

:))

Had enough of Spurr . . . it kept me hunkered down in LA back in the 90s for an extra week, and almost cancelled a Honolulu trip a couple weeks later.

Pep is leaving Alaska, because he knows this asshole is coming up there. I don't blame him. There's not room up there for both of us. {guns}
I'm baaaaaaack.

Update. Stick a fork in 'er, she's done.

http://www.avo.alaska.edu/activity/Redoubt.php

Continued low seismicity, reduced gas emissions, and lack of observable growth in the lava dome suggest that the 2009 eruption of Redoubt may be drawing to a close. Due to this consistent trend in the data, AVO lowered Redoubt's Aviation Color Code from Orange to Yellow, and the Alert Level from Watch to Advisory on Tuesday, June 30. The 1 km-long lava dome at the summit, however, remains potentially unstable. Collapse of the lava dome would likely result in high-level ash production, hot lava block and ash flows, and possible flooding in the Drift River valley.

Web camera views, when clear, show continued steaming at the summit.

AVO scientists conducted field work at Redoubt this week, including measuring gas emissions from the steam and gas plume, observing the lava dome, collecting thermal imagery of the dome, and maintaining field equipment.

AVO will continue to monitor Redoubt's activity closely, but will begin to transition off of 24/7 staffing.
