The Air Force is seeking concepts for a next-generation aircraft to replace the Lockheed Martin F-22 fighter. A solicitation released this week seeks concepts for a tactical aircraft to begin operating in about 2030. The Aerospace Industries Association said the effort is necessary to keeping the U.S. technologically ahead. "Unless new manned aerospace programs start soon, America's capability to design and build future manned combat aircraft will atrophy and threaten the aerospace technological superiority that has long been the hallmark of our national security," said Fred Downey, the AIA's vice president for national security.

Not a bad idea all round, but haven't I read here a number of people stumping for the F-22 over the F-35?

Manned fighters in 2030? Someone in the USAF hasn't been keeping up with the pace of technology.

I've heard a number of AF pilots preferring the F-15 over the F-22...

It took 30 years for the F-22 to go from idea to wheels on the ramp.. I can't imagine how long it will take the next one.

If the tanker bid fiasco repeats itself, USAF pilots will find themselves flying Russian or Chinese planes in 2030.
