Boeing Wins Contract For New Air Force One
Boeing has won a contract to start preliminary work on two new Air Force One presidential aircraft based on the 747-8. The US Air Force awarded Boeing an initial contract worth USD$25.8 million to reduce risk and lower the cost of the program by looking at the tradeoffs between the requirements and design of the new plane, according to the Pentagon's daily digest of arms deals.

Boeing 737 MAX completes first flight; rose to 25,000 feet
The first Boeing 737 MAX flight test aircraft landed at Boeing Field in Seattle after a 2 hr. 44 min. first flight. The CFM International LEAP-1B-powered 737 MAX 8 took off from Renton, Washington at 9:48 am local time on Jan. 29 as hundreds of rain-soaked onlookers cheered. According to Boeing, the aircraft first ascended to 15,000 feet altitude for a series of tests. It then rose to as high as 25,000 feet.

Boeing announces increase in 737 production
Boeing announced plans to ramp up production of its 737 aircraft to 57 planes per month in 2019. The aircraft manufacturer currently produces 42 737s per month. "Stepping up to 57 a month in 2019 just continues the trend of confidence that we see in the narrow-body marketplace," said CEO Dennis Muilenburg.

American Airlines posts $7.6 billion 2015 net profit
American Airlines reported a net profit of $7.61 billion for the full-year 2015, well more than double net income of $2.88 billion in 2014. Excluding special items that included a $3 billion non-cash benefit related to tax valuation, American earned a net profit of $6.3 billion in 2015, up 50% over net income of $4.2 billion excluding special items in 2014. “It’s hard to imagine that just two years ago American Airlines was just emerging from bankruptcy,” chairman and CEO Doug Parker told analysts and reporters.

American Airlines making progress on repainting planes
American Airlines announced that 64% of its fleet, including former US Airways aircraft, has been painted with its new livery. "The only aircraft that won't get paint jobs are those delivered in the new livery and the older aircraft that we'll retire over the next several years," American told employees in a newsletter.

ANA confirms order for three A380s
Japan's ANA Holdings has confirmed it will purchase three Airbus A380s, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines, in a deal worth more than $1 billion. Earlier this month, the carrier said it could not confirm a deal for the three aircraft, which are believed to be three A380s repossessed from low-cost carrier Skymark Airlines following the latter's payment default and bankruptcy.

Jazeera Airways Eyes Long-Haul Venture
Kuwaiti low-cost carrier Jazeera Airways could set up a long-haul service with a foreign partner as an alternative to buying a stake in national carrier Kuwait Airways. Jazeera Chairman Marwan Boodai told Reuters news agency he would still prefer a stake in loss-making Kuwait Airways, but that he was preparing an alternative strategy.

JetBlue Airways reports strong Q4 profit
JetBlue Airways reported a profit of $190 million in the fourth quarter, up from $88 million in the same quarter of 2014. "We posted another strong quarter, producing above industry average revenue performance and running a safe and reliable operation," CEO Robin Hayes said in a statement.

LOT Polish Airlines appoints new management
LOT Polish Airlines’ supervisory board has made management changes. The board has appointed Rafal Milczarski as chairman and Borys Buta as COO and board member. Milczarski co-founded the Baltic Rail, one of the first private cargo railway carriers in Poland. He also founded freight rail carrier Freightliner PL, and was founder and former CEO of Freightliner DE, a German subsidiary of Freightliner PL

EgyptAir Mechanic Suspected In Russian Plane Crash
An EgyptAir mechanic whose cousin joined Islamic State in Syria is suspected of planting a bomb on a Russian passenger plane that was blown out of Egypt's skies in late October. So far Egypt has publicly said it has found no evidence that the MetroJet flight, which crashed in the Sinai Peninsula after takeoff from Sharm el-Sheikh airport, killing all 224 people on board, was brought down by terrorism.

SWISS takes delivery of first 777-300ER
Lufthansa Group subsidiary Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has taken delivery of the first of nine Boeing 777-300ERs in Zurich. By August, six 777s should be in service, with three more expected by 2018. The aircraft will be used to replace some of the carrier’s 15 Airbus A340-300s.

Thai Airways to sell assets, defer aircraft deliveries
Thai flag carrier Thai Airways will pursue a far-reaching cost-cutting program from 1Q2016 to realize up to THB1billion ($28 million) in savings. Thai management said it would seek to defer deliveries of up to some 14 aircraft on order from Airbus and Boeing, including four purchased and eight leased Airbus A350 XWBs, and the remainder of its eight-strong 787 order.

United to launch first direct US-Singapore flights since 2013
United Airlines plans to revive a direct link between the US and Singapore when it launches San Francisco-Singapore Boeing 787-9 flights on June 1. The daily service, subject to regulatory approval, will be the first direct route flown by an airline between any US city and Singapore since Singapore Airlines dropped its flights from Singapore to Newark and Los Angeles in 2013 when it retired its Airbus A340-500 fleet.

Dassault confirms two-year delay for 5X
Dassault Aviation has confirmed a two-year delay and production freeze on its all-new Falcon 5X because of ongoing problems with the Snecma Silvercrest engine. The large-cabin, long-range twinjet – which was rolled out in June 2015 – is not now expected to fly until 2017, with first deliveries in early 2020. After unveiling the 5X in 2013, the French manufacturer had planned the jet’s maiden flight in the third quarter of last year but shortly after roll-out, hitches with the Silvercrest engine began to emerge, and Dassault said late in 2015 it would announce a new testing and production schedule early this year.

Boeing secures deal for 20 US and Australian P-8 Poseidons
Boeing will supply 16 more armed P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to the US Navy and four to the Royal Australian Air Force under a $2.5 billion contract announced this week. The order completes Canberra’s $4 billion request for eight of the Boeing 737-800-derived anti-submarine warfare aircraft which will replace the Lockheed AP-3C Orions introduced in 1968. It also holds options for an additional four examples.

Turkish F-16s to receive new self-protection pods
Turkey’s Lockheed Martin F-16C/D fleet will receive a bolstered electronic warfare capability, after Harris was awarded a contract to provide more defensive aids suites for the air force. Awarded by the US Air Force Air Logistics Center at Robins AFB in Georgia, the deal will lead to Harris providing 21 ALQ-211 advanced integrated defensive electronic warfare suite (AIDEWS) pods for integration on the Turkish air force’s F-16 fleet. The contract also covers maintenance, spares and engineering support.
