Airbus files patent for unique seating model
Airbus has applied to patent a new seating design that would place passengers in tiered circles rather than traditional rows. The new design is intended to relieve stress on the plane's front and back, which currently require heavy structural support.

Dutch Complete Recovery Of MH17 Wreckage
A week long operation to recover wreckage from the crash site of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in Ukraine has been completed, the Dutch government said on Sunday. A cargo train took pieces of the Boeing 777 to the eastern Ukrainian town of Kharkov. The wreckage will be transported to the Netherlands and reconstructed as part of the investigation into the cause of the disaster on July 17. "Despite the complex circumstances and local safety situation, the team was able to work as planned," said a statement issued by Dutch authorities.

Rolls-Royce Wins USD$5 Billion Delta Order
Rolls-Royce has won a USD$5 billion contract to supply engines to power 50 new Airbus planes ordered by Delta Air Lines. Rolls-Royce said the order for engines also included the provision of long-term post-delivery services as part of a "TotalCare" support package.

American Airlines CEO comments on potential upgrade of corporate facility
American Airlines Group Inc. is preliminarily exploring the possibility of upgrading its headquarters. CEO Doug Parker said that no decision has been made, but the carrier will explore all opportunities available. "We have a perfectly acceptable facility today, and just wondering if there might not be a better opportunity," he said.

Swiss Agency Queries Etihad's Darwin Stake
Swiss authorities have given Darwin Airline until the end of January to answer more questions about Etihad Airways' plans to buy a third of the Swiss carrier before it gives the deal the green light. Etihad has already agreed to relinquish a role in the appointment of senior executives in order to secure approval for the deal, Darwin said last month. A spokesman for Switzerland's Federal Office of Civil Aviation (BAZL) said on Saturday that had allayed concerns about Etihad's control of Darwin, but the agency still had questions about the resources Etihad wants to invest in the Swiss airline.

JetBlue to keep Wi-Fi free for now, executive says
JetBlue's customers will continue to enjoy in-flight Wi-Fi access at no charge, said Senior Vice President Marty St. George. The airline partners with Verizon and other sponsors, such as Time and the Wall Street Journal, to cover the cost of the service. "Our customers are actually going to pay us nothing for a fantastic broadband experience," St. George said.

Economy class? Go ahead and stretch your legs, says KLM
KLM this week started operations with the first of its Boeing 777-200s to get its new World Business and Economy cabins – following on from the same upgrade to its 747-400 fleet. The renovation of all 15 Boeing 777-200s will be complete by the end of 2015, and will be followed by KLM’s 10 777-300s.

Lufthansa Gains Market Share In Germany
Lufthansa has won a bigger slice of its domestic market in recent months, its chief executive told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. "At least over the last few months we were able to increase our market share in Germany," CEO Carsten Spohr was quoted as saying in the paper's Monday edition.

NokScoot reveals livery
Thai long-haul, low-cost carrier NokScoot has unveiled the first Boeing 777-200 painted in its distinct livery. The white and yellow fuselage is similar to 49% shareholder Scoot’s livery on its own 777s, while the distinct NokScoot logo is featured on the tailfin. It also bears the ‘beak’ motif found on Nok Air’s 737s. The Thai budget carrier also owns a 49% stake in NokScoot, with the remaining 2% held by a company established by Nok's management.

Airlines Look To Tap Customer Data
Airlines are seeking to work more closely with travel technology companies to mine customer data for ways to generate more revenue beyond ticket sales, emulating other industries already using these methods. While retailers have implemented ever more inventive ways to use customer data, both online and offline, many airlines have been slower, only recently looking to harvest the wealth of information provided by their frequent flyer loyalty schemes. "Revenue from the ticket is barely covering costs these days," Uwe Klenovsky, Commercial Director of Thomas Cook Airlines, said at the CAPA World Aviation Summit in Antwerp.

Lockheed seals $4.7bn deal for latest lot of F-35 fighters
The US government and Lockheed Martin on 21 November finalized a $4.7 billion contract for 43 F-35 Lightning II aircraft. Included in the eighth low-rate initial production (LRIP) deal is $500 million in advanced procurement funding for later productions lots, according to the F-35 joint program office. The deal includes 39 jets for the US military and 14 for various international customers. Lockheed is under pressure to bring down per-unit cost of the F-35 lot over lot. It has met the mark with LRIP 8, which came in 3.5% less per aircraft than LRIP 7 in 2013 and 57% less than the US government's initial purchase, the JPO says.
