Thanks, Boris!
Right now, there are 3 different possible homepage appearances.
The usual config is with the forum overview on the top left, a small photo widget below (featuring latest uploads, most viewed or most loved) and a large photo widget on the right, showing a large featured photo, plus more thumbs from the same photographer.
The featured photo is selected by our screeners. That's the major difference to sites like a.net. Our screeners do not decide what is allowed in the db, and what gets rejected. Instead, they scan the latest uploads, and select the outstanding photos to be displayed on the homepage.
If they find an especially remarkable shot, they flag it as "awesome". When such a shot gets on the homepage, it will occupy the entire homepage, temporarily replacing all other widgets. That is the second possible homepage configuration.
The third option is when a news item is being displayed on the homepage. That usually features a headline, a brief recap of the news event, a related photo from our database, and a link to the respective forum thread.
We will add more widgets to the homepage later on, after we fine-tuned the current ones.
Edit: this is what the homepage looks like when an "awesome photo" is being displayed:
