The World Series Is Better Than The World Cup

MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, Bundesliga, Premier League, UEFA CL, Formula One, NASCAR...

OK, it's presumptuous. Duly noted.

It's also not going to change.

You forget.... World Series
Originally Dated 1890.

World Cup
Originally dated 1930.

I have really no issue with soccer. I think its a great sport (I would prefer a game of the Bears vs. Packers rather than Manchester U vs. Arsenal tho) and I have watched many great games with friends (the best ones were at 0300 in Singapore drinking with my friends).

But I will not stop from my contention that the "World Series" is a global event (certainly not the size of the WC) and it is an older series at that.

I didn't forget anything. I've already mentioned that it's a century+ old, and it's not going to change names now.

But I don't harbor any illusion that it's the world championship of baseball. Nor do I care, which is actually the important point here, and I don't see why anyone else does care. It's a name, it's presumptuous, and it's not going to change.

I was just trying add a silly date to the signature that you wrote to make a point.

Doesn't happen in the civilised world anymore. If you exported baseball to the places where it does still happen, it would happen at baseball games too.

No, sorry, I have to disagree there, John. Even in the most hot-headed countries in the world, people would be tranquilized after latest 4 innings. And you can't riot when you're asleep. :))

I see. How can other nations participate?
Okay, other nations than Canada... :))

Then call it "Old Series". {mischief}

Plus, FIFA boss Sepp Blatter was born before America was even discovered. :))

All trolling aside:

I love football, even though a good deal of matches are extremely boring, FIFA are a bunch of corrupt crooks, and some fans have an IQ that's around the number of goals scored in an average game.

But it's a very dynamic game, and many matches are pretty dramatic, so it provides good entertainment value.

I love baseball as well, even though it can really be tiresome to watch. But I played it for several years, and loved every minute of it. It's a game where you can only win as a team, but whenever you're around the ball, you're on your own. Most original combination of team and individual sports that I know.

And I also enjoy American Football. The combination of athletics and strategy provides a very interesting mix. What pains me with the NFL is the ridiculous amount of advertising. Latest with the playoffs, it becomes a 2+ hour commercial that's occasionally interrupted for a few short sports clips. {bored}

One sport that I really like as well is handball. I know it gained some popularity in the US after the Atlanta Olympics, but is otherwise almost unknown across the pond.

But it's very fast and athletic, and the games are usually very dramatic - a bit like basketball. I've attended countless pro matches here in Germany, and I am yet to see a boring match.

Overall, I think there are interesting aspects about pretty much every form of sports. Except cricket. That's just plain ridiculous. {mischief}

Absolutely. That's one of the reasons why I love it. It's a team sport that is very much based on individual accomplishments.

Oh god, tell me about it. I love football. The sport itself. I absolutely HATE the number of TV commercials, TV timeouts, etc. that are ingrained in it. I doubt I'll ever go to an actual NFL game again. It was horrendous. Much better to watch them on TV.

You'll never miss a play watching the NFL on TV. Never. With baseball, you can easily miss a pitch every now and then, and with tennis (my other favorite sport to watch), you can easily miss a point. That's what I like - a sport that's not based on TV.

I enjoy my American football, and love the Saints, but let's face it: football gives us only what, 15 minutes of actual action per game, if that? Ice hockey, now that's where it's at...60 minutes + of action each and every game.

Excellent summation of soccer. {thumbsup}

I would like to proudly point out that my Chicago Cubs have not won the World Series longer than the World Cup has existed.

After the day Kenny Holland had on day one of NHL free agency I'd almost say soccer is muc more interesting. {grumpy}

I finally watched a bit of the World Cup today - watched most of the 2nd half, and all of overtime of the US vs. Belgium.

Then when that was done, I watched Roger Federer clobber Tommy Robredo.

Now I have one and a half Red Sox games to watch.

Soccer isn't terrible. Especially if I'm rooting for one of the teams, it can be exciting.

You should have let that goat in then shouldn't you. :))

I quite like baseball, it can be quite entertaining. When I'm in the colonies (or dominions when I'm north of the border) I try to take in a game.

Now American throw-egg, I can't get into that at all.

I was hoping the Swiss would beat Argentina, but that wasn't to be, either. Now they get to stay home and hang with cool company.
