Random question prompted by Vic's photo:

On 300-foot-wide runways (like the SLF, Edwards, Beale, and other AFBs), why do they still paint the side stripes at 150 feet wide?

200-foot wide runways have them painted at 200 feet wide, but I've never seen a 300-foot wide runway painted as such.

Always wondered about that.

I'll have to look at my text books, but right of the top, perception comes to mind. Wider markings may give the appearance that you are closer to the runway than you actually are.

Absolutely. However, there are already runways from 50 to 200 feet wide, that are painted as such. I'd imagine going from, say, a 100 foot to a 200 foot runway would make more of a difference than 200 to 300.

On that first video...11 minutes in...they fly over Boeing at Seal Beach Naval Reserve...then cut right past 95% of Long Beach where I was at. Jerks. {grumpy}

Mayor "I'll spin the crap out of the DNC Convention" Villaraigosa has been promoting the Endeavour move from LAX to the California Science Center as 'One Big Parade!' and that we should all come out and watch it.

Charlie Batch and the LAPD say they're closing all surround roads around the route and will be turning anyone and everyone away.

Angelinos won't have much access to watch space shuttle Endeavour's journey across the city to its new home at the California Science Center.

Officials said on Thursday that they will limit public access when they move the space shuttle to Exposition Park from a hangar at Los Angeles International Airport, where it has been since arriving in the city...

...Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa had touted it as "the mother of all parades," and although big crowds are still expected, the celebration is being scaled back dramatically...

...Additionally, the LAPD announced this week it would close off most sidewalks along the way, making it difficult for the public to see the shuttle go by.

The sidewalks and streets will be closed about a mile ahead of and behind Endeavour as it crawls along at a speed of no more than 2 mph.

Residents will be able to watch from their private lawns, inside businesses and along side streets...

...Instead of trying to catch the shuttle on the streets, people are being encouraged to attend two shuttle "celebrations" that are taking place along the route.

Went to the USC game today, which gave us the opportunity to walk right by Endeavour's temporary home. Can't see much, but I can say that this is the closest I have ever been to a Space Shuttle (sorry about the quality, these are iPhone shots):
