Stargazers throughout the UK have reported seeing a meteor-like streak of light in the darkened skies.
The BBC was contacted by people in Scotland, the Midlands, Wales, and northern and south west England who saw the display at about 1740 GMT.
One witness driving home from work in Coventry said the light was a bit scary because it was so "incredibly bright".
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11954932I was out walking at the time, and saw this. It first appeared out of the corner of my eye, right where I'd have expected something on the approach to Liverpool to come into my vision. I had enough time think "something going into Liverpool" and to turn towards it before it disappeared, it lasted far longer than your typical "shooting star". It was about the brightness of your typical A319/737 landing lights, but the angle... Put it this way: I stood for a good while, looking for signs of a fire.
I'd ruled out a meteor because of how bright it was and how long it lasted, eventually putting it down to a weird reflection off the inside of my glasses. (It happens.) Good to know what it actually was.
My friend and I applied for airline jobs in Australia, but they didn't Qantas.
