Pro-Russian rebels have shot down a military transport plane in eastern Ukraine, killing all 49 Ukrainian service personnel on board.

Ukraine's defence ministry said the Il-76 transport plane crashed after coming under anti-aircraft fire over Luhansk.

Yeah, what JL said. I'll be watching for Ostrovsky and Langston via Vice News to see what they have to say. I'm betting the insurgents were just upping the ante since Ukrainian forces were finally getting the upper hand in places around Sloviansk, Luhansk or wherever else around there. After having watched those YouTube vids, JL is right, Ukraine will likely be going for a hammerdown and all but declare war out there.

And now a helicopter:

The Ukrainian military says one of its helicopters has been shot down by pro-Russian rebels in the east, killing all nine people on board.

It says the Mi-8 helicopter, used for transporting military cargo, was hit by a rocket shortly after take-off outside the rebel-held city of Sloviansk.

It comes a day after the rebels vowed to observe a ceasefire until Friday, in response to a government peace plan.
