USAF Expects First Tanker Flight By 2012

Assuming all goes well with the latest restart of the $35 billion KC-X tanker competition, the Air Force says the plane should make its first flight by 2012 and hopes to be flying refueling missions by 2017. Under the current request for proposals, 18 aircraft are to be delivered by 2017.

Seems a little ambitious for a government project. Are they both totally based on the respective freighter version w/o much conversion to military standards?

Both versions are already being delivered to other countries, the KC-767 is being delivered to Italy and Japan, and I think there have been a couple of deliveries of the A330 MRTT, too.

Yep, as I've mentioned before, I've even seen the Italian one doing low-level flights at BIL. Nice airplane.
