Two Russian fighter jets have collided while training for an air show near Moscow, killing one pilot and injuring at least five people on the ground.

Two pilots from the elite Russian Knights aerobatic team parachuted to safety, but a third did not survive, a Russian air force spokesman said.

One woman suffered burns and at least four other people were injured as one jet struck houses near the airfield.

Russian Fighters + Air Shows = Disasters
And let's get one thing straight. There's a big difference between a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician; the other is an artist in love with flight. — E. B. Jeppesen

It does seem like they're always crashing. Are they statistically less safe than their American/Swiss/Canadian/etc. counterparts?

No, I think that US and NATO have a higher safety margin in their routines.

I see this was a rehearsal for a show the following day. Could have been a HELL of a lot worse (Rammstein).
