Problems in manufacturing process led to Trent 900 failure - 16 Qantas A380 engines to be replaced
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) says that a problem in the "manufacturing process" led to the 4 November uncontained engine failure on a Rolls-Royce Trent 900 powering a Qantas Airways A380. Investigations at Rolls-Royce facilities in Derby revealed an "area of fatigue cracking" within a stub pipe that feeds oil to the High Pressure (HP)/Intermediate Pressure (IP) bearing structure. Link

Mexico returns to FAA Category 1 safety status Mexico's aviation safety rating was raised to Category 1 by US FAA just four months after the agency downgraded the country to Category 2 for being "unable to fully comply with all of the international safety standards" set by ICAO. Link
Russian government ‘ready’ to accept EU designation The Russian government is “ready” to accept the EU designation clause in its air services agreements with EU member states, but it still needs to analyze what the consequences will be for its carriers, Counsellor-Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the EU Evgeny Mokeev told ATW on the sidelines of the EU-Russia Air Transport New Horizons conference in Brussels this week. “We are trying to assess the situation and we are holding consultations with our carriers. Before we make a regulatory decision, we have to be sure that the conditions are comfortable for both sides.” Link
EU transport ministers encouraged to support EC air navigation proposals The EU’s 27 Transport Ministers were “encouraged” yesterday at the EU-Russia Air Transport New Horizons conference in Brussels to support the EC's new proposals on the 2010-2014 performance targets for air navigation service providers, EC VP-Transport Siim Kallas said following the Transport Council meeting in Brussels. Finnair strike continues; Blue 1 cabin crew reach agreement Blue 1 cabin staff reached an agreement ending a work action that began Nov. 30, but Finnair said a solution has not yet been reached with its striking flight attendants. Both carriers' cabin crew are represented by the Finnish Cabin Crew Union. Finnair flights have been “seriously affected” by the work stoppage. Link

Condor Airlines, a German leisure carrier, will renew its short- and medium-haul fleet by 30 Airbus A320 family aircraft, the dpa news agency reported. The new A320 fleet should replace 25 aircraft with an average age of 11 years, including 13 757-300s and 12 A320s older versions. The new aircraft are scheduled to be delivered between 2012 and 2017.
Rockwell Collins said Virgin Blue Airlines selected its suite of scaleable avionics for its order of 50 firm 737NGs, 25 options and 25 purchase rights. Virgin Blue is the first airline to select the Rockwell Collins SAT-2200 SATCOM system.
Air Astana is in talks to acquire three Boeing 787-8s, Bloomberg reported. The airline aims to receive 787s in 2014 if the talks conclude with an order. That order, plus the planned acquisition of six Airbus A320s would lead KC to invest more than $500 million through 2015, CEO Peter Foster said.
GECAS will open new offices in Accra and Cape Town "to expand and strengthen relationships with its airline customers in Africa." It also announced it leased four Boeing 737-800s to South African Airways; one Airbus A320 to Senegal Airlines; and one 737-400 to Buraq Airlines.
