The strong recovery in air travel continued in May as ARC reported that ticket sales through participating travel agencies rose 25.7% compared to May 2009 to $7.08 billion. It marked the seventh consecutive month of improvement and an acceleration compared to the 21.6% year-over-year increase recorded for ticket sales for the January-May period. May credit card sales rose 26% to $6.31 billion. Total fares, excluding taxes and fees, jumped 27.1% to $6.01 billion. Separately, ARC said it is developing a fraud prevention solution in cooperation with Accertify. "For carriers without effective fraud prevention solutions, rising 'card not present' fraud means either a disproportioned allocation of scarce resources or simply suffering the losses," said ARC Director-Risk Management Dottie Hogan. The ARC Sentinel solution "employs a shared adaptation of Accertify's Interceptas platform" and is targeted for availability in the coming year.

American Airlines named Executive VP-Marketing Daniel Garton president and CEO of regional affiliate American Eagle. He succeeds the retiring Peter Bowler, who held the post for 11 years. The role will not be entirely unfamiliar for Garton, who served as president of the unit in 1995-1998. He has held his current position at AA since 2002. "During Garton's tenure at American Eagle, he engineered the airline's transition from four separate carriers to one and introduced the regional airline to the jet age with the acquisition of its first jet aircraft," AA noted.

Chairman and CEO Gerard Arpey said, "Dan has remarkable talent and ability that, when coupled with his broad knowledge of the challenging airline industry and his insight from his time as president of American Eagle, make him uniquely qualified to lead American Eagle." Garton has been with AA since 1984. AMR Corp. announced its interest in divesting Eagle in 2007, but the process has not moved forward in the intervening years.

Air Canada said yesterday that that it has "received a commitment" from GE Japan Corp. for a senior secured term loan facility of "up to $170.5 million" that will allow it to finance "a portion of the purchase price" for 16 aircraft that it currently leases and operates. The leased aircraft comprise 12 A319s and four 767-300ERs. It said it plans to buy eight of the A319s and the 767s next year and four of the A319s in 2012.

AirBaltic and TAV Airports Holding signed an MOU to become joint venture partners for the possible development, construction and operation of a new passenger terminal at Riga International.
