PICTURES: Fifth C919 prototype completes test flight
The fifth prototype of Comac’s C919 programme has completed its first test flight.
Aircraft 105 – the fifth C919 test aircraft – took off from Shanghai Pudong International Airport on the morning of 24 October. It undertook a test flight of one hour and 37 minutes, during which operational checks where conducted.

Chinese bank venture to take over 27 Norwegian A320neos
Scandinavian budget carrier Norwegian is to establish a joint venture with China Construction Bank Leasing to take over 27 Airbus A320neo aircraft scheduled for delivery from next year.
The airline says the leasing arm will be the majority owner of the venture, with a 70% shareholding, while Norwegian will hold the balance.

Spirit intends order for up to 150 A320neo-family jets
US budget carrier Spirit Airlines is intending to order 100 Airbus A320neo-family jets, for deliveries which will continue through to 2027.
Spirit says the memorandum of understanding covers a "mix" of A320neo and A321neo jets, as well as the A319neo – the smallest member of the re-engined family which has struggled to land orders.

Strong international performance lifts Q1 revenue for Qantas
A strong performance in Qantas' international unit has helped the carrier post a near 2% lift in its total group revenue to a record A$4.56 billion ($3.12 billion) for the fiscal first quarter.
Total group capacity saw a marginal 0.2% decline, driven by a 0.6% cut in group international capacity and a 0.5% increase in group domestic capacity.

American reports solid 3Q growth despite ongoing MAX grounding
American Airlines’ adjusted net income for the 2019 third quarter increased 15% year-over-year (YOY), despite continued operational challenges related to the ongoing grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX and a labor dispute with its mechanics. Net income for the quarter, excluding net special items, was $630 million on total revenue of $11.9 billion, a 3Q record and an increase of 3% YOY.

Korean Air to introduce onboard Wi-Fi on new aircraft
Korean Air will debut inflight Wi-Fi on new aircraft deliveries, which will start the airline's new fleet renewal phase, scheduled for 2020.
The Seoul-based carrier expects to receive its first Airbus A321neos in July 2020, while additional Boeing 787-9 orders are scheduled to arrive from September, Korean Air VP-planning Hoyoon Jeong said.

South Africa bans Air Zimbabwe over debts
Air Zimbabwe has been barred from operating from South African airports owing to failure to pay debts relating to aeronautical charges.
Johannesburg features on the airline's advertised network but Airports Company South Africa says it has "suspended" the airline from its nine airports effective 22 October.

All-Airbus Jazeera open to Boeing switch: chief
Kuwait's Jazeera Airways is not ruling out a complete switch of aircraft type to the Boeing 737 Max as part of its development plan.
Jazeera exclusively operates Airbus A320-family jets and is holding discussions on future requirements, with a view to taking a decision next year.

Jazeera hints at Manchester if new London route performs
Kuwaiti budget carrier Jazeera Airways is to examine Manchester as a second UK route if performance on its new London Gatwick service meets targets.
The airline is set to operate four times weekly to Gatwick from 27 October, using Airbus A320neo jets, and raise the frequency to daily starting in December.

Thai 777 engine failure spurs emergency checks order
Operators of certain Boeing 777-300ERs are being ordered to conduct engine checks after the uncontained failure of the General Electric GE90 powerplant on a Thai Airways International aircraft.
The failure involved Thai's flight TG970 as it commenced its take-off roll for Zurich on 20 October.

American expects 737 Max grounding cost to rise to $540m
American Airlines expects its total cost for the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max to be about $540 million in pre-tax earnings in 2019, up from a previous estimate of $400 million.
The Dallas/Fort-Worth-based airline took a $140 million hit in the third quarter alone for the grounding of its fleet of 24 Max aircraft, the company says in its quarterly investor update on 24 October.

Dublin airport enjoys record breaking september
Dublin Airport enjoyed its busiest ever September, handling more than three milion passengers (+4%) during the month for the first time in its 79 year history.
Passenger numbers to and from continental Europe increased by 6% as almost 1.7 million passengers travelled to and from European destinations during the month.

Smart check-in services to be implemented at Narita Airport
Narita Airport is implementing a smart check-in initiative that incorporates self-service bag drop and facial recognition services.
As tourism in Japan is expected to increase in the coming years, Narita International Airport is to address the diverse needs of customers around the world by introducing the ‘Smart Aiport’ in 2020. The initiative will feature self-service bag drops and facial recognition technology to shorten the time required to board an aircraft, as well as renovations at some of its First and Business Class lounges.

Bidders selected for Thomas Cook’s Gatwick slots
The sale of the London Gatwick Airport slot portfolio previously held by UK leisure carrier Thomas Cook is progressing following the selection of preferred bidders.
Thomas Cook Airlines entered compulsory liquidation Sept. 23 after last-ditch talks to save the business failed.

Boeing KC-46A starts IOT&E despite US Air Force concerns
The Boeing KC-46A Pegasus in-flight refueling tanker formally transitioned into Initial Operational Test and Evaluation (IOT&E) on 22 October.
The US Air Force programme executive officer for the tanker formally certified the long-awaited process, the service says in a media release.
