IATA advocates for gender diversity
In a further effort to increase gender diversity and level the playing field for women in the airline industry, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is launching a new initiative designed to increase the number of women in the sector.
On Thursday, IATA launched the “25by2025 campaign”, which asks its 290 members for a voluntary commitment to increase the number of women in senior positions and under-represented areas by either 25% against currently reported metrics or to a minimum representation of 25% by 2025.

​Boeing Max return plan targeting up to 70 deliveries a month
Boeing aims to deliver up to 70 737 Max aircraft monthly to clear its backlog once the grounding is lifted, FlightGlobal has learned.
The manufacturer has not discussed publicly its plans for the profile or sequence of deliveries across its production line and the estimated 250-plus aircraft that have been built since deliveries were suspended on 13 March.

VASO assembles first Il-96-400M fuselage
Russian manufacturer VASO has completed joining the first airframe for a new Ilyushin Il-96 derivative.
VASO describes the event as "a significant step" in the project to develop a passenger variant of the Il-96-400T freighter, designated the -400M.

Swiss A220 engine failures prompt rotor inspection order
Operators of Airbus A220s are being instructed to conduct checks of the low-pressure compressor on Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engines, following two similar incidents involving failures on Swiss aircraft.
The incidents – on 25 July and 16 September – both occurred to Swiss A220-300s operating the Geneva-London Heathrow route.

Southwest expands service to Hawaii, adds new routes
A year after it first launched flights to Hawaii, Southwest Airlines is expanding its service to the islands, offering new routes between three West Coast cities and various destinations in the 50th state beginning in March 2020, the airline says on 25 September.
The Dallas-based airline will add new daily service from Sacramento to Kahului, Maui as well as daily service from Oakland and San Jose to both Lihue, Kauai and Kona, on the Big Island.

Thomas Cook failure spurs UK to act on airline insolvency
Leisure giant Thomas Cook Group's dramatic collapse appears to have jolted the UK government into rethinking the way airline failures are handled.
Thomas Cook Airlines in the UK was grounded on 23 September, as the struggling tour operator filed for compulsory liquidation.

Injuries suffered as Azur 767 evacuated after hard landing
Investigators are probing a hard landing involving a Boeing 767-300ER at Barnaul airport which resulted in a landing-gear fire and injuries to passengers as they evacuated the twinjet.
The aircraft had been operating flight ZF2244 on 25 September, from the Vietnamese city of Nha Trang.

BA counts cost of pilots' industrial action
British Airways parent IAG has put the cost of the UK flag carrier's pilot strike, and other threatened industrial action at London Heathrow, at €170 million ($186 million).
It attributes the majority of this – some €137 million – to the strike by cockpit crews which were planned for 9, 10 and 27 September.

Vistara, Airbus sign A320 support pact
Indian carrier Vistara has signed a deal with Airbus covering engineering and maintenance works for its Airbus A320s.
The contract, under the Flight Hour Services – Tailored Services Package, will encompass a wide range of services. These include component supply and repair as well as technical management services for the fleet.

​PICTURES: VietJet receives first 240-seat ‘Cabin Flex’ A321neo
Vietnam low-cost carrier VietJet Air has taken delivery of the first Airbus 321neo equipped with 240 seats in the new Airbus Cabin Flex configuration.
The aircraft has 30 seats in the front with extra legroom, with the remaining 210 seats behind, according to an image provided by the airline.

India's Alliance Air seeks to lease two ATR 72-600
Air India's regional unit Alliance Air is seeking to lease two new ATR 72-600s that can be delivered by September 2020.
The regional carrier states in tender documents that it intends to lease the turboprops for 12 years, and prefers bidders which have owned or leased at least 10 commercial aircraft.

Beijing's Daxing airport commences operations
Beijing Daxing International airport commenced operations on 25 September with China Southern Airlines operating the inaugural flight from the facility to Guangzhou.
China Eastern Airlines, Air China, China United Airlines, Capital Airlines and Hebei Airlines also operated services on the first day, following the official opening by Chinese president Xi Jinping.

London City airport reports growing 'local appeal'
London City Airport's appeal with the local population is growing, with new data showing that more people living within a three mile radius of the gateway used it in 2018 than ever before.
New analysis by the airport of 2017, and 2018 Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) postcode data, has found that in 2018, 143,000 departing passengers used the airport who live within a three-mile radius - a 22% increase from 117,000 passengers in 2017.
